Indiana elects a Governor in presidential even years. Last regular: Tuesday, 5 November 2024. Next regular: Tuesday, 7 November 2028. Do not invent a 2026 Governor race. The House of Representatives is 2026. Half the State Senate is 2026. This desk is 2028.
When ninety-two counties actually vote
- Last regular general: Tuesday, 5 November 2024.
- Next regular general: Tuesday, 7 November 2028. Confirm poll hours on IndianaVoters. Indiana polls have run 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. — confirm the live hours.
- Primary: confirm the 2028 date on the Election Division when that calendar is posted. Indiana’s statewide primary is typically early May. Do not invent the Tuesday.
- Lieutenant Governor: nominated at the party convention, then on the same general ticket. Confirm the live rule.
This is a regular gubernatorial election. It is not a U.S. Senate race, though Indiana’s Class III is on the same November — a different desk. The Attorney General is also 2028. Read the sample ballot line by line.
Winners take office the second Monday of January (Article 5, Section 9). After 7 November 2028 that is January 2029. Confirm the live Monday.

A complaint against this desk is not a Unigov mayor file
A resident who was mistreated by a state agency, a license that never moved, or a cabinet that would not answer files on official doors: the Governor’s office, the agency of jurisdiction, the Attorney General (that hire is also 2028 — a different line), the courts, and — for election process — the Election Division and the county clerk. A Facebook thread is not a grievance.
Indianapolis’s mayor is a different office (Mayor of Indianapolis). Fort Wayne’s mayor is not this desk. Do not file a state executive grievance at city hall.
Impeachment, when it is actually this constitution’s file, is articles in the House and a Senate trial — not a comment.
A vacancy in this chamber of the executive is succession under Article 5, not a tweet. Do not invent a special as the default.
After the river and the lake-effect in the same week
Relief this office actually runs is a declaration and a Guard call-up in state status. A White River flood, ice on I-65, a Calumet lake-effect night, an Ohio River ice year at Evansville — mutual aid with Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and Illinois is real. Those states do not vote for this Governor.
The General Assembly’s hour is the statute and the appropriation. The Governor’s hour is the night the river comes over the walkway. Indiana’s veto is weak — majority override, no line-item. Read the office page before you read a mailer.
Papers, the Guard in state status, the night shift on 92 counties
You are hiring the Governor of Indiana for the whole state — four years, one executive, a Lieutenant Governor on the same general ticket. Papers a resident actually needs: a status on a cabinet file, a clemency process that is not a rumor, a disaster question that is not a mayor’s. The night shift is 92 counties, not one Circle.
The staff is the office. A serious Governor is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy. Indianapolis is the job. The rest of the state is the hire.
Last regular 5 November 2024; next is 7 November 2028
Due process on this hire: there is no Governor primary in 2026. Next regular class is 7 November 2028. Confirm the 2028 primary, the convention clock for the Lieutenant Governor, mail, and voter ID on the Election Division. Do not teach a shortcut. Do not transplant Delaware’s three-fifths onto Article 5, Section 14. Do not transplant Missouri’s September veto session onto Indianapolis.
The Constitution does not pause because 2026 was a House year. Equal protection does not pause because a county is rural. Fort Wayne does not become the capital because a mailer said so.
Eight years in twelve is a clock, not a crown
Petition. Property. Peaceable assembly at the Statehouse and in a Switzerland County river town. Equal protection in ninety-two counties. The right to a sample ballot that matches what the envelope actually holds — including the right to have seen no Governor line in 2026.
This office executes state law that can touch a license, a tax, a school, a prison, a river, a road, and a vote. It must not treat Fort Wayne as the capital, Indianapolis as the whole White River, or a U.S. Senate race as this desk. It must not crown itself.
Indianapolis is the capital. The people of the state hire the office. The Election Division is the door.
