Somerset County, New Jersey

Somerset County · Somerville · a Raritan-valley seat still hires a county · not Maryland
Somerville is the seat. Franklin is not the hall. Princess Anne is Maryland.
Somerset is a central New Jersey county on the Raritan, created 1688. Somerville is the seat. It is a borough. It is not the capital. Trenton is the capital of New Jersey and sits in Mercer. Franklin Township is the largest municipality by population. Hillsborough is the largest by land. Bridgewater is large. None of those three is the county hall.
This is not Somerset County, Maryland. Princess Anne is that seat. Crisfield is that water town. Revells Neck is that detention house. This is not Somerset County, Pennsylvania. This is not Somerset, UK. This is not Maine’s Somerset (Skowhegan). Staff who paste a Lower Shore crab town onto North Bridge Street are on the wrong state.
Twenty-one municipalities include Somerville, Bound Brook, Bridgewater, Franklin, Hillsborough, Montgomery, Bernards, Bedminster, Raritan Borough, Manville, and the rest. Flemington is Hunterdon. New Brunswick is Middlesex. Morristown is Morris. Elizabeth is Union. Trenton is Mercer.
This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — North Bridge Street court security, process, a short-term detention hub at 40 Grove Street, and longer stays sent to Morris — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Somerset County.
Five Commissioners. No Executive. Not Union’s Manager plan.
Somerset is governed by a Board of County Commissioners of five, elected at-large on a stagger, with an appointed County Administrator. Administration lists at 20 Grove Street, Somerville. There is no County Executive. That is not Mercer’s Executive map. That is not Union’s nine-commissioner County Manager plan — Union is the only New Jersey county on that charter. That is not Maryland Somerset’s five commissioners by district.
The Sheriff is a constitutional officer, three years, Article VII, Section II, paragraph 2. The board does not hire this badge. Last regular sheriff general was Tuesday, 4 November 2025. Next regular is Tuesday, 7 November 2028. Tuesday, 3 November 2026 is not this oval. Maryland’s Somerset Sheriff is 2026 — a four-year desk in a different state. Mercer — the capital — is 2026. Union is 2026. The Governor is 2029.
Raritan Valley and Watchung, not the Manokin
The Raritan River, the Millstone, the Watchung ridges, and Duke Farms country are this land. I-287, I-78, Route 22, and Route 206 are this pavement. The historic courthouse lists at 20 North Bridge Street. A newer courthouse sits next to it. No Tangier Sound as this water. No U.S. 13 as this highway. Staff who paste Princess Anne’s Prince William Street onto Somerville, or a Skowhegan jail onto Grove Street, are on the wrong county.
How a Somerville public actually files a paper
Each of the twenty-one municipalities has a site. Bridgewater’s site does not speak for Montgomery. The Sheriff’s listing speaks for court, process, warrants, transport, and a detention hub. The Somerset County Jail at 40 Grove Street remains this Sheriff’s short-term house for court-day holds. Longer stays go to the Morris County Correctional Facility under a five-year shared-services contract that began 1 June 2024. Confirm the live county listing. The County Clerk sits at 20 Grove Street. Do not send a Franklin family to Princess Anne for a county paper. Do not send them to Trenton for a Somerset writ.
North Bridge Street is court. Grove Street is a detention hub, not Revells Neck.
Crime in Somerville is often Somerville Police. Crime in Franklin is often Franklin Police. New Jersey State Police is the state. Civil process, Superior Court security at 20 North Bridge Street, sheriff sales, and fugitive work are this Sheriff. Jail as a short-term house is still this badge at 40 Grove Street. Jail as a longer stay is Morris — 43 John Street is that highland badge’s house, used here by contract. Revells Neck Road, Westover, Maryland, is a county Warden in a different state. Rights do not change at the Bedminster line. Remedy for borough police is the Borough. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the Raritan floods Bound Brook is this count first.
A student who does not treat Bridgewater as the shire
A student uses town pages, the county jobs board, or the Sheriff’s official listing at 20 Grove Street. The 1909 historic courthouse is a landmark. It is not the whole job. Outreach that only knows one valley postcard is not doing Montgomery or Bedminster.
