Morris County, New Jersey

Morris County · Morristown · thirty-nine municipalities still hire a county
The Green is a park. The hall is on Washington Street.
Morris is a North Jersey highland county, created 1739, named for a colonial governor, not for Kansas. Morristown is the seat. The Green is a town square. It is not the county government. Dover, Parsippany–Troy Hills, and Morristown National Historical Park are this map. They are not the county hall. Trenton is the capital of New Jersey and sits in Mercer. Morris County, Kansas, is a different state. Morristown, Tennessee, is a different state.
Thirty-nine municipalities run from the Passaic River towns to the Highlands and the Warren line. Newark is Essex. Paterson is Passaic. Flemington is Hunterdon. Newton is later (Sussex). Trenton is Mercer.
This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — Washington Street court security, process, and the John Street jail this badge still holds — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Morris County.
Seven at-large. No Executive. Not Hudson’s charter.
Morris is governed by a Board of County Commissioners of seven, elected at-large on a stagger. There is no County Executive. An appointed County Administrator runs day-to-day departments. The board reorganizes each January and names a director. That is not Mercer’s Executive map. That is not Hudson’s Executive-plus-Register map. That is not Monmouth’s five.
The Sheriff is a constitutional officer, three years, Article VII, Section II, paragraph 2. The board does not hire this badge. Last regular sheriff general was 4 November 2025. Next regular is Tuesday, 7 November 2028. Tuesday, 3 November 2026 is not this oval. Mercer — the capital — is 2026. The Governor is 2029.
Highlands and the Whippany, not Tennessee
The Whippany, the Passaic, Interstate 287, Interstate 80, Route 24, and Route 10 are this land. The Administration and Records Building lists at 10 Court Street, Morristown. The courthouse lists at 56 Washington Street, Washington and Court. No gold capitol dome as the county hall — that dome sits in Mercer. Staff who paste Morris County, Kansas, onto The Green are on the wrong county. Staff who treat a National Historical Park as the shire are on the wrong map.
How a Morristown public actually files a paper
Each of the thirty-nine municipalities has a site. Parsippany’s site does not speak for Chester. The Sheriff’s listing speaks for court, process, warrants, transport, and the jail. The Morris County Correctional Facility at 43 John Street, Morristown, is this Sheriff’s Bureau of Corrections — not a separate county Corrections department. The County Clerk sits with the board on the Court Street campus. Do not send a Randolph family to Trenton for a county paper. Do not send them to Kansas for a New Jersey writ.
Washington Street is court. John Street is this Sheriff’s house.
Crime in Morristown is often Morristown Police. Crime in Dover is often Dover Police. New Jersey State Police is the state. Civil process, Superior Court security at Washington and Court, sheriff sales, specialized units, and the house at 43 John Street are this Sheriff. Rights do not change at the Chatham line. Remedy for town police is the Town. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when ice closes I-287 is this count first.
A student who does not confuse a National Park with a county
A student uses town pages, the county jobs board, or the Sheriff’s official listing in the courthouse. Legal Services lists at 30 Schuyler Place, second floor. The National Historical Park is real. It is not the county hall. Outreach that only knows one park is not doing Netcong or Washington Township.
