What this county is
Middlesex is a geographic county in eastern Massachusetts. It is not a Midwestern courthouse county with a full board running roads and trash. County government is abolished. What remains is a map: Cambridge, Somerville, Medford, Malden, Arlington, Belmont, Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Lexington, Concord, Framingham, Natick, Marlborough, Lowell, Billerica, Chelmsford, and the other cities and towns the census and the Trial Court still put in Middlesex.
It is the most populous county in the Commonwealth. That does not make it Boston. Boston is Suffolk. Somerville touches Boston and is still Middlesex. Brookline is Norfolk. Worcester the city is Worcester County.
Courts still say Middlesex. The Sheriff is still elected here. Municipal police, fire, schools, and 311 are city and town services. Confirm abolitions on the Secretary of the Commonwealth county page.
Land
Charles River cities on the Boston line. Merrimack mill city at Lowell. 128 and the Pike as travel, not as the county itself. Minuteman towns that are not a costume. No harbor like Suffolk. No canal like Barnstable. A flood here is a river and a basement in Medford or a millrace in Lowell, not Revere Beach.
Politics, law, technology, justice, education, outreach, remedy, relief, service, due process, rights
Voters still hire a Sheriff on this map for six years. They hire mayors, managers, and select boards in each municipality. They do not hire a county commission for the trash. Official doors are each city or town site plus the Sheriff’s site plus the Commonwealth. Crime and fire are municipal. Jail and civil process are the Sheriff. Prosecution is the Middlesex District Attorney — another office. A student looks at that city’s jobs page or that Sheriff’s jobs page. Outreach that only knows Kendall Square is not doing Ayer. Remedy for a Cambridge police issue is Cambridge. Remedy for a jail issue is the Sheriff. Relief in a Merrimack flood is mutual aid plus the Commonwealth. Papers still get served in a town that never makes a lab postcard. Rights do not change at the Belmont line.
