Five College is a neighbor, not a county
Hampshire is a geographic county in western Massachusetts. It is not a Midwestern courthouse county with a board running roads and trash. County government was abolished January 1, 1999. What remains is a map: Northampton, Amherst, Easthampton, Belchertown, Hadley, South Hadley, Ware, Hatfield, and the hill towns the Trial Court still puts in Hampshire.
The Five College consortium sits on this map and on the South Hadley line. It is not a county government. Springfield is Hampden. Greenfield is Franklin. Holyoke is Hampden.
Courts still say Hampshire. The Sheriff is still elected here. Municipal police, fire, schools, and 311-equivalents are city and town services. Confirm abolitions on the Secretary of the Commonwealth county page.

Land — river, notch, Quabbin towns
The Connecticut River through Hadley and Northampton. Route 9 as travel, not as the county itself. Ware looks at the Quabbin. Hill towns west of Williamsburg are still this county. A flood here is a river meadow. A winter day in Cummington is not a commencement in Amherst. No Springfield skyline as the whole story. No Mohawk Trail as the whole story (that is Franklin).
Politics and law — no commission
Unlike Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Norfolk, and Plymouth, Hampshire does not elect county commissioners. Residents deal with municipal halls and state agencies. That does not erase the Sheriff, the deeds office, or the court names. Northampton and Easthampton use city forms. Amherst uses a city form and still calls itself a town in ordinary talk — confirm the charter on the official site. The General Court and special acts did the abolition.
Technology, education, outreach
Each municipality has its own site. Amherst’s site does not speak for Ware. The Sheriff’s official site speaks for custody and process on Rocky Hill Road. A student looks at that town’s jobs page or that Sheriff’s jobs page — not a campus board pasted over the county. Outreach that only knows downtown Northampton is not doing Worthington.
Justice, rights, remedy, relief, service
Crime and fire are municipal. Jail and civil process are the Sheriff (205 Rocky Hill Road). Prosecution is the Northwestern District Attorney — another office, shared as a district with Franklin. Rights do not change at the Belchertown line. Remedy for a town police issue is that town. Remedy for a jail issue is the Sheriff. Relief in a river flood is mutual aid plus the Commonwealth. Papers still get served in Ware.
