Calvert County, Maryland

Calvert County · Prince Frederick · the peninsula sits here
Oldest Southern Maryland county still on a spine road
Calvert was erected 1654. It is a narrow peninsula: Patuxent River west, Chesapeake Bay east, Anne Arundel north, St. Mary’s south, Charles across the river. Prince Frederick is the seat. Solomons is a place, not the county government. Chesapeake Beach and North Beach (the Twin Beaches) are incorporated towns. Annapolis is the capital and sits in Anne Arundel. Ocean City is Worcester.
Places include Prince Frederick, Dunkirk, Owings, Huntingtown, St. Leonard, Lusby, Solomons, Chesapeake Beach, North Beach, Sunderland, Port Republic, and Barstow. Calvert Cliffs — chalk, plant, state park — are this shore.
This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — primary patrol plus the Barstow Detention Center — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Calvert County.
Commissioners still sit. There is no County Police.
Calvert’s county government is a Board of County Commissioners, not a County Executive, not Anne Arundel’s charter. There is no county police department in the large-metro sense. The Sheriff is primary law enforcement. MSP still has a barracks. Twin Beaches have town government. Fire, rescue, and EMS are county and volunteer in the Southern Maryland pattern. The Detention Center on Stafford Road, Barstow is this Sheriff.
The Sheriff is four years, Article IV § 44, 2026 on the State Board of Elections local-office list. The Governor is also 2026 — a different desk.
Chalk cliffs, not a wooden dome, not a gorge
The Patuxent is this western water. The Bay and Calvert Cliffs are this eastern water. Route 2/4 is this spine. No State House as the county hall. No Cumberland Narrows as the county story. No Atlantic boardwalk. Staff who paste Ocean City onto Solomons, or Church Circle onto Church Street, are on the wrong county.
Duke Street holds the elections office
The Board of Elections is at 30 Duke Street, Lower Level, Prince Frederick (P.O. Box 798). The Sheriff is 30 Church Street. Same town, different door. A family in Lusby registers here, not in Glen Burnie, not in Towson. Each town has a site. Chesapeake Beach does not speak for Dunkirk.
A plant and a museum are not the county
Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant is in this county and is not a county department. Calvert Marine Museum is Solomons. A student uses county pages, the jobs board, or the Sheriff’s official listing. Outreach that only knows a Saturday at Solomons is not doing Owings.
Courts, patrol, Barstow, rights
Crime on the peninsula is this Sheriff (and MSP). Jail as a local house is this Sheriff. Jail as a long state sentence is DPSCS. Civil process and court security are this Sheriff too. Rights do not change at the Lusby line. Remedy for a patrol or a booking is the Sheriff. Relief in a Bay surge is this count first. Annapolis is not this firehouse.
