A county that kept its government
Bristol is a geographic county in southeastern Massachusetts and a county government that was not abolished. The Secretary of the Commonwealth lists county commissioners as elected only in Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Norfolk, and Plymouth. Bristol is on that list. Voters here also elect a county treasurer. That is the SOS table, not a slogan.
The map is Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton, Attleboro, and the towns: Acushnet, Berkley, Dartmouth, Dighton, Easton, Fairhaven, Freetown, Mansfield, North Attleborough, Norton, Raynham, Rehoboth, Seekonk, Somerset, Swansea, Westport. Taunton is the historic shire town. New Bedford and Fall River are the large port-and-mill cities. They are not the whole county.

Land — Taunton River, two harbors, the Rhode Island line
Mount Hope Bay and the Taunton River at Fall River. New Bedford Harbor and the working waterfront. The Rhode Island line from Seekonk to Westport — not Providence as this county. I-195 as travel, not as the county itself. A hurricane here is a waterfront flood and a mill-city basement. A winter day in Mansfield is not a summer day on the New Bedford piers. No Cape Cod Canal. No Berkshire ice notch. Plymouth is next county east. The Cape is farther east.
Politics — commission, Aggie, not the jail
Three county commissioners, overlapping four-year terms (SOS: 2026, 2028, 2030). County treasurer on a six-year clock (SOS: 2026, 2032, 2038). Bristol County Agricultural High School sits under the county, not under the Sheriff. Confirm on official Bristol County and SOS pages. The Sheriff is a separate elected officer with a county constituency and a state appropriation. City charters govern Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton, Attleboro. Towns have select boards.
Law, technology, education
Courts still say Bristol — sessions in the three large cities. Register of deeds remains a county-titled office. Each municipality has its own site. A student looks at that city’s jobs page, the county’s page, Bristol Aggie, or the Sheriff’s employment page — not a campaign site.
Justice, outreach, rights, remedy, relief, service
Crime and fire are municipal. Jail and civil process are the Sheriff (Faunce Corner, North Dartmouth). Prosecution is the Bristol District Attorney — another office. Outreach that only speaks New Bedford waterfront is not doing Easton. Rights do not change at the Somerset line. Remedy for a city police issue is that city. Remedy for a jail issue is the Sheriff. Relief in a hurricane is mutual aid plus the Commonwealth. Papers still get served in Westport.
