Bennington County, Vermont

Bennington County · two shires · the monument is not the government
The corner with two shire towns
Bennington is a geographic county in Vermont’s southwest. It is one of the counties that still talks in two shires: Bennington and Manchester. That is a court-and-paper fact, not a tourism slogan. Towns run towns. The county as a government is thin: assistant judges, courthouse, county tax, statutory support for the Sheriff. The Battle Monument is in the Town of Bennington. It does not levy the tax and it does not hire the Sheriff.
Municipalities include Bennington, Manchester, Pownal, Shaftsbury, Arlington, Dorset, Sandgate, Rupert, Peru, Landgrove, Winhall, Sunderland, Woodford, Glastenbury, Searsburg, Readsboro, Stamford, and the rest of the official town list. Brattleboro is Windham. Rutland City is Rutland County. Burlington is Chittenden.
This page is Side One civic teaching. The Sheriff’s job is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Bennington County.
Land — Taconic, Green Mountain, two lines
Mount Equinox and the Green Mountain National Forest are real. The Massachusetts line at Pownal and Stamford is real. The New York line is real. No ocean. No capital dome. No Lake Champlain as this county’s water — that lake is north and west of here. Staff who write “southern Vermont” as if it were one town are not doing Readsboro.
Law and a weak county, said slowly
Selectboards and town clerks are the municipal doors. Assistant judges sit the county chair on a four-year clock — same constitutional chapter as the Sheriff, different office. Confirm county support on 24 V.S.A. § 73. Do not transplant a Massachusetts county commission.
Education and technology without a shop-town app
Each town has its own site. Bennington College is a neighbor. A student looks at town employment pages, the State jobs board, or the Sheriff’s official page. Manchester’s sidewalk is not a county portal.
Outreach, rights, remedy, relief, service
Northshire is not Southshire. Forest towns are not the monument. Crime and fire are town, State Police, or a sheriff contract. Civil process is the Sheriff. Prosecution is the Bennington County State’s Attorney. Rights do not change at the Glastenbury line. Remedy for a town police issue is that town. Relief in a forest washout is mutual aid. Service of a paper is still a person at a door in Stamford.
