What is a precinct?

A voting precinct (sometimes called a voting district, election district, or ward subdivision) is the smallest geography election officials use to assign voters to a polling place and to report results. Precinct boundaries are set under state and local law and can change after redistricting, annexations, or administrative updates.

How this map works (v1)

  • United States → State → County (or parish, borough, census area, independent city)
  • County panels link to educational pages already published on this site
  • National precinct polygons are a future layer—data is large and updates often—so v1 focuses on the stable county framework voters and researchers start from

How to use it

  • Search for a county or state name
  • Click the map to drill down
  • Use “County briefing” for local government context
  • Use “Sheriff election briefing” for office-focused voter education

Disclaimer: This map is for civic education only. It is not an official voter registration tool. Confirm your precinct, polling place, and ballot rules with your local election office or secretary of state.
