What this office is
The Alabama State Senate is the upper house of the Alabama Legislature. Thirty-five Senators. That number is in Article IV, Section 50 of the Alabama Constitution: not more than thirty-five Senators, not more than one hundred and five Representatives. The Senate is one-third the House. The Legislature’s own door at ALISON is plain: each Senator represents a district of about 137,000 Alabamians.
The term is four years. Alabama does not stagger this chamber. The Secretary of State’s election cycle chart puts State Senator on the same quadrennium as Governor and State Representative: 2018, 2022, 2026, 2030. All thirty-five seats stand together. The next regular election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Senators take office at midnight of the day of their election — not in January. Confirm that clock on ALISON and Alabama Votes.
This is not a United States Senate seat. The federal files live at Alabama Class II and Alabama Class III. This chamber does not vote in Congress, does not confirm federal judges, and does not sit in Washington.
This is not the Alabama House of Representatives. One hundred and five desks is a different house. This is not the Governor. This is not the Attorney General. This is not a Mayor.
Montgomery is the capital, on Goat Hill in Montgomery County, on the Alabama River. Huntsville is the largest city. Birmingham is the largest metro. Neither is the map. The Tennessee Valley, the Shoals, the Black Belt, the Wiregrass, the Gulf at Mobile, and the Piedmont hire this chamber — thirty-five districts, not one skyline.

Counsel on Goat Hill, not in Washington
The U.S. Senate is the federal-state hinge. The Governor is the state-house hinge. The Attorney General is the justice hinge. The Alabama State Senate is this state’s counsel: a bill that is not Congress, a confirmation that is not the U.S. Senate, a rural county and a capital county in one chamber.
The Lieutenant Governor is President of the Senate. The body elects a President Pro Tempore. Standing committees — Rules; Finance and Taxation Education; Finance and Taxation General Fund; Confirmations; Judiciary; Governmental Affairs; Education Policy; Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry — are how the work is actually cut. A Senator has two homes. Montgomery for the session. The district for the people who hired the seat. Staff who only know Dexter Avenue, or only know downtown Birmingham, or only know a rocket city as the whole state, are not doing the job. Dexter Avenue is the city. Goat Hill is the capitol. The Mayor of Montgomery is a different office (Mayor of Montgomery).
Article IV and the two ledgers
Alabama writes state law in two houses. A bill that is not passed by this Senate is not Alabama law. The Governor signs or vetoes; the Legislature can override where the constitution actually gives it. Item veto on appropriations is a Governor tool, not a Senator’s gavel.
Alabama runs two state budgets in ordinary years: the Education Trust Fund and the General Fund. The Senate keeps those ledgers in separate finance committees. A school-aid year and a prisons-and-roads year are not the same bill. This is not a federal appropriations file.
Advice and consent is real here, and it is state. ALISON: the Senate has sole power of confirmation of certain appointees designated by the Constitution and by statute. That is not a U.S. Senate hearing. It is not the Attorney General’s docket.
Vacancies are a Governor’s writ of election (Amendment 97 / Section 46). If a vacancy falls on or after October 1 of the third year of a quadrennium, the seat stays empty until the next general. Do not invent a holdover. Confirm on the Secretary of State.
There are no legislative term limits in Alabama. Consecutive-term caps that apply to the Governor are not this desk.
Qualifications sit in Section 47: a Senator at least twenty-five, a citizen and inhabitant of the state for three years, a resident of the district for one year before election. Always verify the current text of the Constitution. This page is teaching, not a filing packet.
ALISON is the door, not a rumor

The official election door is Alabama Votes. Registration, ballot status, and the sample ballot belong on My Info and the county Board of Registrars — sixty-seven of them.
Staff who only know a Facebook page are not doing the job. A constituent who was told “you can vote by text” was not told the truth until a .gov page says otherwise.
Confirmations, courts, and equal protection
A confirmation hearing is this chamber’s justice minute: an appointee the Governor named, a board that will actually touch a license, a prison, a school, or a river. It is not a trial. The Attorney General is the state’s lawyer (Attorney General of Alabama). The Senate is not that office.
Equal protection on this map is not a Birmingham-only file. A Black Belt county and a Baldwin beach precinct hire the same Constitution. A district that never makes a Jefferson County broadcast still sits in this chamber. The U.S. Attorney and a circuit judge are not this Senator.
Redistricting is legislative work under this constitution. Maps get litigated. Treat a court order and a stay as clocks, not as slogans. Confirm which map a given election actually used on the Secretary of State and the courts — not on a thread.
After a tornado year and a Gulf night
Care this office actually gives is a bill and an oversight hour, not a church. Do not invent a ministry. A tornado night in the Valley, a drought on Black Belt ground, a Gulf storm that is not a Montgomery press conference — those land as appropriations, emergency statutes, and questions to agencies the Governor runs.
Rural hospitals, a state prison, Medicaid as state policy, ADECA, a National Guard year in state status: the Senate does not command the Guard (the Governor does). It writes and oversees the statutes those desks live under. Chaplaincy that exists in a prison or a Guard unit is that department’s staffing. It is not this page’s pulpit.
How a student learns this chamber
The Legislature’s own shops — bill drafting, fiscal notes, the Legislative Services Agency — are how the work is actually learned. Page and intern openings belong on official legislative and university civic pages, not on a campaign site. A student who wants the civic path confirms those doors on .gov and campus postings.
County Boards of Registrars, circuit clerks, and the Secretary of State’s Elections Division are how election work is learned. Autauga is a county. It is not this chamber. A law-school clinic that files in Montgomery still files in a court, not in a Senate committee.

Census and reapportionment. The Education Trust Fund versus the General Fund. A legislative-day clock (Alabama’s regular session is a short clock — thirty legislative days inside a longer calendar window). A hurricane track in the Gulf. A tornado watch in the Tennessee Valley. A drought report from a Black Belt extension office. Committee attendance. Confirmation questionnaires. Dockets that a bill would actually change.
That is situational awareness for this chamber. It is not spy fiction. It is not a Mayor’s night radio. It is not the Attorney General’s case map.

Mississippi is a different state. Georgia is a different state. Tennessee is a different state. Florida is a different state. The Perdido is not a license to treat Baldwin as another Gulf state. Phenix City looks at Columbus, Georgia, and remains Alabama.
