- The term is four years. This chamber is staggered. Seventeen odd-numbered State Senate seats — districts 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, and 33 — are this Tuesday. Even-numbered districts last stood in 2024 and next stand in 2028.

This is a regular State Senate election for half the chamber. It is not a U.S. Senate race. Wisconsin has no Class II and no 2026 U.S. Senate. Class I is 2030. Class III is 2028. It is the Governor race on the same Tuesday — a different desk. It is the Attorney General race on the same Tuesday — a different desk. It is the Assembly — that is 99 seats, a different chamber, on the same Tuesday.

Madison hire, no Class II this year
You are hiring seventeen State Senators for Wisconsin this cycle — four years, the upper house of state law, advice and consent that is not federal, a professional session in a capital that is not Milwaukee, a nested district that is not the whole state. Read the chamber page before you read a mailer. This is not a U.S. Senate seat, not a Governor, and not a Mayor.
Winners take office the first Monday in January 2027 (4 January 2027). That is Wisconsin’s clock. Confirm on docs.legis.wisconsin.gov.
The Senate elects its own President. The Lieutenant Governor does not gavel this floor. That is a constitutional clock. It is not a campaign line.
A vacancy is a writ, not an appointment
A resident who was mistreated by a state agency, a confirmation that went sideways, or a district office that would not answer files on official doors: the Senator’s district office, the committee of jurisdiction, the courts, and — for election process — the Elections Commission, the municipal clerk, and the county clerk. A Facebook thread is not a grievance.
Professional standards for a state employee sit with that agency and with the law the Senate actually wrote. The Attorney General is the state’s lawyer (2026, a different hire). The Senate is not that complaint box. Send people to docs.legis.wisconsin.gov and myvote.wi.gov.
If a Senate desk goes empty, the Governor issues a writ for a special election. There is no appointment to a vacant Senate seat. Do not invent West Virginia’s list of three. Do not invent Washington’s county-board fill. Assembly specials that already ran are Assembly unless a Senate writ actually posted.
A freeze on Mendota
Relief this chamber actually votes is a statute and an appropriation. A Mendota freeze, a Northwoods ice night, a Mississippi flood in the Driftless, a Superior gale — mutual aid and emergency years still run through the Governor’s desk first. The Senate’s hour is the bill that funds the year after, the oversight that asks whether the money moved, and the rural hospital or road statute that was already on the calendar.
Milwaukee is Wisconsin. It is not the capital. Mutual aid with a Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, or Michigan county is real. Those counties do not vote in this chamber.
First Monday in January is the oath
Bills. Confirmations. A four-year clock on odd numbers. A district office that returns the call from a Northwoods county that never makes a Milwaukee broadcast. Papers a constituent actually needs: a status on a bill, a confirmation notice, a referral to the agency that holds the license.
The staff is the office. A serious Senator is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy. The white dome is the session. The district is the hire. One Senator and three Assembly members share the map. They are not the same hire.
Odd numbers are this year's class
Due process on this hire: a primary on 11 August 2026, a special if a writ actually posted, a general on 3 November 2026. Wisconsin does not run Pennsylvania’s even-number midterm. It does not run Virginia’s odd-year whole chamber. Seventeen odd-numbered seats are this even year. The next odd-number class is 2030. The even-number class is 2028.
The Constitution does not pause because a session is a biennium. Equal protection does not pause because a district is Northwoods or isthmus.
Equal protection in seventy-two counties
Counsel. Property. Peaceable assembly on the Square and in a Northwoods precinct. Equal protection in seventy-two counties. The right to a sample ballot that matches what the machine or the paper actually shows — including a sample ballot with no Senate line in an even-numbered district.
This chamber writes state law that can touch a license, a tax, a school, a prison, a lake, and a vote. It must not treat Madison as the state, Milwaukee as the capital, or a Great Lakes port as this chamber’s home. It must not treat a missing U.S. Senate race as this desk. It must not crown itself.
Madison is the capital. The people of the district hire the seat. The municipal clerk is the door.
