- The term is four years. This chamber is staggered inside seventeen dual-member districts. Seventeen regular State Senate seats — one from each district — are this Tuesday. The other seventeen last stood in 2024 and next stand in 2028.
- Remainders posted: Districts 3 and 17 on the same Tuesday. A remainder is the other seat in that dual map, filling an unexpired term. It is not a third Senator. Confirm on the Secretary of State.
This is a regular State Senate election for half the chamber. It is not a U.S. Senate race, though West Virginia’s Class II is on 2026. That is Washington. This is Charleston on the Kanawha. It is not the Governor race — that desk is 2028. It is the House of Delegates — that is 100 seats, a different chamber, on the same Tuesday.

Charleston hire, Class II is a different desk
You are hiring seventeen State Senators for West Virginia this cycle — four years, the upper house of state law, advice and consent that is not federal, a citizen session in a capital that is not Huntington and is not Charleston, South Carolina, a dual district that is not the whole state. Read the chamber page before you read a mailer. This is not a U.S. Senate seat, not a Governor, and not a Mayor.
Winners take office 1 December 2026. The Legislature convenes the second Wednesday of January 2027 for sixty calendar days. That is West Virginia’s clock. Confirm on wvlegislature.gov.
The Senate President is the Lieutenant Governor. That is a constitutional clock. It is not a campaign line. West Virginia does not elect a Lieutenant Governor statewide.
The Governor names from a party list of three
A resident who was mistreated by a state agency, a confirmation that went sideways, or a district office that would not answer files on official doors: the Senator’s district office, the committee of jurisdiction, the courts, and — for election process — the Secretary of State and the county clerk. A Facebook thread is not a grievance.
Professional standards for a state employee sit with that agency and with the law the Senate actually wrote. The Attorney General is the state’s lawyer (2028). The Senate is not that complaint box. Send people to wvlegislature.gov and sos.wv.gov.
If a Senate desk goes empty, the Governor appoints from a list of three legally qualified persons submitted within fifteen days by the party senatorial-district executive committee. The Governor has five days after the list. If no list arrives, the Governor still appoints from that party. A later election can still be required. That is how remainder lines share this Tuesday. Do not invent Wisconsin’s writ-only special as the default.
A Kanawha rise and a ridge night
Relief this chamber actually votes is a statute and an appropriation. A Kanawha flood, a hollow washout, an ice night on a ridge road, a mine-country water year — mutual aid and emergency years still run through the Governor’s desk first. The Senate’s hour is the bill that funds the year after, the oversight that asks whether the money moved, and the rural hospital or road statute that was already on the calendar.
Huntington is West Virginia. It is not the capital. Charleston, South Carolina is a different city. Mutual aid with an Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, or Kentucky county is real. Those counties do not vote in this chamber.
December first is the oath
Bills. Confirmations. A four-year clock on one seat per district. A district office that returns the call from an Eastern Panhandle county that never makes a gold-dome broadcast. Papers a constituent actually needs: a status on a bill, a confirmation notice, a referral to the agency that holds the license.
The staff is the office. A serious Senator is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy. The gold dome is the session. The district is the hire. Two Senators share a district. They are not on the same Tuesday unless a remainder also posted.
Dual-member maps, one vote
Due process on this hire: a primary on 12 May 2026, a remainder if § 3-10-1 actually required an election, a general on 3 November 2026. West Virginia does not run Virginia’s odd-year whole chamber. It does not run Wisconsin’s odd-number single-member map. Seventeen regular seats are this even year. The next regular class for the other seventeen is 2028.
The Constitution does not pause because the district elects two Senators. Equal protection does not pause because a district is a hollow or a panhandle.
Equal protection in fifty-five counties
Counsel. Property. Peaceable assembly on Kanawha Boulevard and in a McDowell precinct. Equal protection in fifty-five counties. The right to a sample ballot that matches what the machine or the paper actually shows — including a sample ballot with one Senate line, or two if a remainder posted.
This chamber writes state law that can touch a license, a tax, a school, a prison, a mine, a river, and a vote. It must not treat Charleston as the state, Huntington as the capital, or Charleston, South Carolina as this city. It must not treat a 2026 U.S. Senate Class II as this desk. It must not crown itself.
Charleston on the Kanawha is the capital. The people of the district hire the seat. The county clerk is the door.
