The arena is twenty-five mixed numbers

This page is the arena for this chamber, this cycle. Unique teaching for the job lives on the office twin.

It is not a campaign. It does not crown a winner. It does not tell you who to vote for. Names belong on the official sample ballot.

Twenty-five of fifty, not even-odd

  • Election Day: Tuesday, 3 November 2026
  • Montana held its primary 2 June 2026. Filing closed 4 March 2026. Confirm leftover dates on the Secretary of State.
  • The 2026 class is twenty-five mixed-number districts, not an even-number rule and not an odd-number rule. The Secretary of State’s 2026 offices list names them: 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 18, 19, 22, 23, 25, 28, 29, 31, 32, 34, 41, 42, 43, 48, 49, 50.
  • The other twenty-five stand in 2028. Do not invent a 2026 race for a district that is not on that list.

This is a regular State Senate election for half the chamber. It is not a U.S. Senate race, though Montana’s Class II is on 2026. It is not the Governor race — Montana’s Governor is 2028. It is not the State House — that is one hundred seats, a different chamber, all on this Tuesday.

Districting and Apportionment Commission lines are the 2026 map unless a court says otherwise. Treat a commission posting and a stay as clocks. Confirm which line this district actually uses on .gov, not on a comment.

Eight years in any sixteen-year period is a clock, not a crown. Confirm who is actually ineligible on sosmt.gov — not on a thread.

Names live on sosmt.gov

Do not take names from a news comment or a text thread.

  1. Official candidate list / sample ballot — Montana Secretary of State
  2. My Voter Page on sosmt.gov
  3. County sample ballot and the county election administrator in this county (Montana has 56)
  4. Current Senator of record (not the same thing as the 2026 nominee) — leg.mt.gov
  5. Registration and ballot status — My Voter Page

If a site and the official sample ballot disagree, the sample ballot wins.

A vacancy is a county board, not a thread

A resident who was mistreated by a state agency, a confirmation that went sideways, or a district office that would not answer files on official doors: the Senator’s district office, the committee of jurisdiction, the agency the statute actually names, the courts, and — for election process — the Secretary of State and the county election administrator. A Facebook thread is not a grievance.

A hole in this chamber is filled by appointment of the boards of county commissioners of the county or counties in the district, of the same political party, under MCA 5-2-402 — not by a Governor appointment of the Senator, and not by a special as the default. Confirm on sosmt.gov. Do not invent a caucus.

Professional standards for a state employee sit with that agency and with the law the Senate actually wrote. The Attorney General is the state’s lawyer. The Senate is not that complaint box. Send people to leg.mt.gov and sosmt.gov.

Fire, ice, and a high-plains night

Relief this chamber actually votes is a statute and an appropriation. A fire year on the Bitterroot, a freeze on the Hi-Line, a drought on eastern farm ground, a flood on the Yellowstone that is not Last Chance Gulch — mutual aid and emergency years still run through the Governor’s desk first. The Senate’s hour is the bill that funds the year after, the oversight that asks whether the money moved, and the rural hospital or road statute that was already on the calendar. 2026 has no regular session. The next regular session is 2027.

Billings is Montana. It is not Wyoming. Troy is Montana. It is not Idaho. Mutual aid with a Wyoming or Idaho county is real. Those counties do not vote in this chamber.

What four years of mountain counsel buys

Bills. Confirmations. A state budget in a ninety-day odd year. A district office that returns the call from a county that never makes a Helena broadcast. A citizen calendar. Papers a constituent actually needs: a status on a bill, a confirmation notice, a referral to the agency that holds the license.

The staff is the office. A serious Senator is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy. Helena is the session. The district is the hire. The high plains are still the hire.

Eight years in sixteen is a clock, not a crown. Confirm who is actually term-limited on the official filing — not on a thread.

First Monday of January is Montana's oath

Due process on this hire: a primary on 2 June 2026, a general on 3 November 2026, a swear-in on the first Monday of January following — 4 January 2027. Montana does not run all-mail as the default. Polls, voter ID rules, absentee ballots, and registration deadlines belong on sosmt.gov. Do not teach a shortcut.

A vacancy after this election is still a county-board appointment unless the statute actually writes a special. A map fight is a commission file and a court file. Do not transplant Iowa’s odd-number rule onto Montana. Twenty-five mixed numbers are this class.

The Constitution does not pause because a session is ninety days. Equal protection does not pause because a district is a reservation-adjacent county.

Rights on fifty-six counties

Counsel. Property. Peaceable assembly on Last Chance Gulch and in a Glacier County precinct. Equal protection in fifty-six counties. The right to a sample ballot that matches what the machine or the paper actually shows.

This chamber writes state law that can touch a license, a tax, a school, a prison, a river compact, and a vote. It must not treat Billings as the capital, Helena as a plains city, or the western valleys as the whole state. It must not treat a U.S. Senate race as this desk. It must not crown itself.

Helena is the capital. The people of the district hire the seat. The Secretary of State is the door.
