The 2029 clock — not 2026
- Next regular Mayor election: Tuesday 6 November 2029 (four-year municipal clock; last Mayor election 4 November 2025)
- Not 2026. Lansing does not elect a Mayor in even federal years. Michigan’s 2026 statewide ballot — Governor, Attorney General, and the rest of that ticket — is a different hiring. Do not invent a 2026 Mayor race for this city.
- Not 2027 for Mayor. Under the charter the voters adopted on 4 November 2025, 2027 is a Council transition: Ward 1, Ward 3, and two at-large seats on short two-year terms so the whole Council can line up in 2029. The Clerk has said so on the record. Confirm the 2027 notices with the City Clerk. A Council year is not a Mayor year.
- 2029 is the lined-up year. Mayor, City Clerk, five ward seats, and four at-large seats on one four-year odd-year cycle. From that point the city means to hold city elections every four years, not every two. Confirm the current charter text. A campaign mailer is not the clock.
If a primary is required, Michigan cities in this county have run the Mayor primary on the August odd-year date. The last Mayor primary was 5 August 2025. Do not print an August 2029 date from memory. Print the Clerk’s notice.
Polls in Michigan are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Anyone in line at close may vote. Same-day registration at the clerk’s office is real in this state, with proof of residency in the last fourteen days. Confirm at michigan.gov/vote.
This is not a Governor race. Michigan’s Governor clock is a different office. The 2026 statewide ballot is not this Mayor’s hiring.

Flood, ice, outage
Grand River flood, Red Cedar backup, a Saginaw underpass full of water, an ice night on I-496, a BWL outage, a wreck that dumps US-127 onto city pavement, a heat day that opens cooling centers. Mutual aid with East Lansing, Delta, Delhi, and the townships is real. East Lansing is not Lansing’s firehouse. The Governor’s emergency desk is later. This hydrant is first.
Emergency Management sits inside Lansing Fire. Public Service moves water off streets. BWL restores lines and streetlights on its own emergency numbers. 911 is the life call. 311 and Lansing Connect are the next morning’s work order. A resident who waits for a statewide press conference has waited too long. Confirm flood and road closures on official city and National Weather Service products — not on a group chat.
What the people are buying
Four years of a full-time chief executive. Police night shift. Fire and EMS. Plows. Trash. Sidewalks. A municipally owned water-and-light utility. 311 that actually closes tickets. A budget the Council can see. A three-year strategic plan the 2025 charter now requires the Mayor to write. An independent auditor the new charter also wrote. Papers the city has to serve. Transports. A ladder company on a south-side duplex. Streetlights on a west-side block that never makes a postcard.
The staff is the office. A serious Mayor is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest 311, no rumor as policy. You are not hiring a Governor. You are not hiring a sheriff. You are not hiring East Lansing.
The clock on this desk
Arrest, booking, presentment, property, permits, hearings, 60-day complaint windows, civil service, union clocks. The Constitution does not pause because a radio is busy. Same-day registration, photo ID at the polls, absentee as Michigan actually runs it — those are rights with a procedure, not slogans. Charter, ordinance, and state election law set the filing dates. Do not teach a shortcut. Do not teach a “just this once.”
A vacancy is written: Council President, then the next November that can elect a successor for the rest of the term. A recall, if anyone files one, is a Michigan statutory machine with its own petition clock — confirm with the Clerk and the Bureau of Elections, not with a thread.
Rights this office must not run over
Counsel. Property. Peaceable assembly on the Capitol lawn and in the neighborhoods — the lawn is state ground; the neighborhoods are city. Equal protection from Old Town to the south side, from the Eaton line to the Clinton line, for the pieces of this city that sit in three counties. Speech. Religion. Disability access at the clerk’s window. Language access at 311. The right to file a police complaint within the city’s own 60-day door. The right to a sample ballot that is the Clerk’s, not a PAC’s.
The Mayor is a servant of this city, not a brand. Detroit is not this vote. Grand Rapids is not this vote. East Lansing is not this vote. 2026 is not this race.
