What this office is
The Governor of Iowa is the state executive. One office. The whole state. The term is four years. The next regular election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Confirm the clock, and the Governor of record, on official Iowa sites. A term limit is not a crown for the next name.
This is not a United States Senate seat. The Senate files live at Iowa Class II and Iowa Class III. The Governor does not vote in Congress, does not confirm federal judges, and does not run a House district.
This is not a mayor. Des Moines is the capital, in Polk County, under the gold dome. It is the largest city. That does not make Des Moines the map. The Mississippi towns, the Missouri river counties, Cedar Rapids, Sioux City, Iowa City, Davenport, and the farm counties hire the same Governor.
Iowa is ninety-nine counties. The Governor’s House map is not the four U.S. House districts. The Senate seat does not split. This office does not split either — it is one executive for the state.

How the job fits this community
The inbox is a state inbox: a capital file from the gold dome that is not a river town, a farm-and-biofuel file that is not Polk County, a flood file on the Mississippi or Missouri, a university-and-lab file, and a winter ice year that never makes a downtown broadcast.
People here meet the state government as Medicaid, a state prison or hospital, a driver license, a National Guard year, a tornado night, a drought on prairie ground, and a flood that is not a Des Moines press conference. What the job entails
- Execute state law. The Governor is not a legislator. The Governor runs the executive branch the General Assembly created.
- Sign or veto. Iowa bills. Item veto where the constitution actually gives it.
- The state budget. Propose, bargain, and live with what the General Assembly passes. This is not a federal appropriations bill.
- Appoint. Boards, some judges, agency heads — whatever this constitution actually gives.
- Commander of the Iowa National Guard when the Guard is in state status.
- Clemency where Iowa law gives it.
- Disaster years. Flood, tornado, ice, drought — the desk that is not a mayor and not a Senator.
- Two homes. Des Moines for the job. The rest of the state for the people who hired the office.
What a day is like
There is no single Tuesday. In the capital: a visitor from Polk County and a visitor whose drive started in Sioux City, a farm county that is not on I-80 news, or a river town that is not Iowa’s 3rd House district. In the state: a capitol desk, a prairie day, and a river day that is not Des Moines.
The staff is the office. A serious Governor is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.
