Washington elects a Governor in presidential even years. Last regular: 5 November 2024. Next regular: Tuesday, 7 November 2028. Do not invent a 2026 Governor race. The Attorney General is also 2028 — a different desk. The House of Representatives is 2026. That is not this hire.
Top-two in August, mail ballot, November 7 general — confirm VoteWA.gov
- Primary: Tuesday, 1 August 2028 (first Tuesday in August — RCW 29A.04.311). Top-two: all candidates on one primary ballot; the two highest advance, regardless of party. Confirm leftover dates on sos.wa.gov/elections.
- General: Tuesday, 7 November 2028.
- Filing: candidate filing is a statutory window in May of the election year. Confirm the live week on the Secretary of State. Do not teach a 2026 leftover as this cycle.
- Not a slate: the Lieutenant Governor is separately elected. Do not teach a joint ticket here.
This is a regular gubernatorial election. It is not a U.S. Senate race. Washington’s 2028 Senate race is Class III — a different desk. There is no 2026 Senate. Ten U.S. House districts are 2026. This desk is 2028.
Winners take office the second Monday in January after the election — Monday, 8 January 2029. Confirm the live calendar. That is Washington’s clock. It is not Bismarck’s December 15. It is not Salt Lake City’s first Monday. It is not Charleston’s first Monday after the second Wednesday.
Washington is vote-by-mail. The county auditor mails the ballot. Drop boxes close at 8 p.m. on Election Day. A mailed ballot must be postmarked by Election Day. Confirm on VoteWA.gov. Do not teach a precinct-only Tuesday as this state’s whole method.

Initiative signature math for the next cycle still uses the votes cast for Governor at the last regular gubernatorial election. Confirm the live thresholds on sos.wa.gov. That is a denominator. It is not a scoreboard for a name.
A complaint against this desk is not a Seattle mayor file
A resident who was mistreated by a state agency, a license that never moved, or a cabinet that would not answer files on official doors: the Governor’s office, the agency of jurisdiction, the Attorney General’s consumer or official-misconduct doors (that desk is a different 2028 hire), the courts, and — for election process — the Secretary of State and the county auditor. A Facebook thread is not a grievance.
A Seattle mayor complaint is a city file. Olympia’s mayor is a different office (Mayor of Olympia). Do not file a state executive grievance at city hall.
Impeachment, when it is actually this constitution’s file, is House articles and a Senate trial (Article V) — not a comment.
After the pass closes and the river comes up in the same week
Relief this office actually runs is a declaration and a Guard call-up in state status. An I-90 pass night, a Columbia crest, a fire east of the Cascades that never makes an Olympia press conference, a coastal wind year — mutual aid with Oregon and Idaho is real. Those states do not vote for this Governor.
The Legislature’s hour is the statute and the sitting. The Governor’s hour is the night the water is the road. Read the office page before you read a mailer.
Papers, the Guard in state status, the night shift on 39 counties
You are hiring the Governor of Washington for the whole state — four years, one executive, a Lieutenant Governor hired on a separate line. Papers a resident actually needs: a status on a cabinet file, a clemency process that is Article III, Section 9 not a rumor, a disaster question that is not a mayor’s, a ferry or pass question that is state. The night shift is 39 counties, not one skyline.
The staff is the office. A serious Governor is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy. Olympia is the job. The rest of the state is the hire. Seattle is not the capital.
January 8 is the oath, not an August primary as the office
Due process on this hire: top-two primary 1 August 2028, general 7 November 2028. Confirm filing, mail and drop-box rules, and same-day registration at a voting center on VoteWA.gov. Do not teach a shortcut. Do not teach a closed party primary this state does not run for this desk.
A vacancy after the election is succession under Article III, not a tweet. Do not transplant Utah’s joint ticket onto Olympia. Do not transplant West Virginia’s May primary onto an August top-two.
The Constitution does not pause because 2026 was even. Equal protection does not pause because a county is rural. Seattle does not become the capital because a mailer said so. East of the mountains still votes for this Governor.
An unbounded clock is still not a crown on Budd Inlet
Petition. Property. Peaceable assembly on Budd Inlet and in a Palouse precinct. Equal protection in thirty-nine counties. The right to a sample ballot that matches what the envelope actually holds. The right to a mailed ballot this statute actually sends.
This office executes state law that can touch a license, a tax, a school, a prison, a river, a road, a ferry, and a vote. It must not treat Seattle as the capital, Olympia as the whole Sound, or a U.S. Senate race as this desk. It must not crown itself.
Olympia is the capital. The people of Washington hire the office. The Secretary of State and the county auditor are the door.
