2028 Election — Governor of North Carolina

This is Side Two — the 2028 hire, not a 2026 General Assembly leftover
This page is the arena for this office, this cycle. Unique teaching for the job lives on the office twin.
It is not a campaign. It does not crown a winner. It does not tell you who to vote for. Names belong on the official sample ballot.
North Carolina elects a Governor in presidential even years. Last regular: Tuesday, 5 November 2024. Next regular: Tuesday, 7 November 2028. Do not invent a 2026 Governor race. The House of Representatives is 2026 (all 120). The State Senate is 2026 (all 50). Class II U.S. Senate is 2026. This desk is 2028.
When one hundred counties actually vote
- Last regular general: Tuesday, 5 November 2024.
- Next regular general: Tuesday, 7 November 2028. Confirm poll hours on ncsbe.gov.
- Primary: confirm the 2028 date when that calendar is posted. North Carolina’s presidential-year statewide primary has run on Super Tuesday. A second primary, where one is actually required, has its own statute. Do not invent the Tuesday.
- Lieutenant Governor: a separate statewide hire on the same November. Not a joint ticket.
- Council of State: eight more elected executives on this same 2028 clock, including the Attorney General. Read the sample ballot line by line.
- Same November, different desk: U.S. Senate Class III.
This is a regular gubernatorial election. It is not a U.S. Senate race. It is not a 2026 House flyer with the title swapped.
Winners take office on the first day of January next after the election (Article III, Section 2). After 7 November 2028 that is 1 January 2029.
Two consecutive terms is a clock. It is not a crown for the next name.
Names belong on ncsbe.gov
Do not take names from a news comment or a text thread.
- Official candidate list / sample ballot — North Carolina State Board of Elections
- County sample ballot — the county board of elections in this county
- Current Governor of record (not the same thing as the 2028 nominee) — governor.nc.gov
- Registration and ballot status — ncsbe.gov voter tools
If a site and the official sample ballot disagree, the sample ballot wins. If a 2026 sample ballot had no Governor line, there was no Governor race that year.
A complaint against this desk is not a Raleigh mayor file
A resident who was mistreated by a state agency, a license that never moved, or a cabinet that would not answer files on official doors: the Governor’s office, the department of jurisdiction, the Attorney General (that hire is also 2028 — a different line on the same ballot), the courts, and — for election process — the State Board of Elections and the county board. A Facebook thread is not a grievance.
Raleigh’s mayor is a different office (Mayor of Raleigh). Charlotte’s mayor is not this desk. Do not file a state executive grievance at city hall.
Impeachment, when it is actually this constitution’s file, is articles in the House and a Senate trial — not a comment.
A vacancy on the Council of State is filled by this Governor until the next General Assembly election more than 60 days out (Article III, Section 7(3)). That is a different file from this hire. Confirm the live text. Do not invent a special as the default.
After a hurricane year and a mountain freeze
Relief this office actually runs is a declaration and a Guard call-up in state status. A Banks landfall that then dumps rain on the piedmont, ice on I-40 in the mountains, a flood on the Neuse or the Cape Fear — mutual aid with Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia is real. Those states do not vote for this Governor.
The General Assembly’s hour is the statute and the appropriation — three-fifths to override, no line-item, last in the Union to get the veto. The Governor’s hour is the night the hurricane radio is the job. Read the office page before you read a mailer.
Papers, the Guard in state status, the night shift on 100 counties
You are hiring the Governor of North Carolina for the whole state — four years, one executive, a Lieutenant Governor hired separately, a Council of State that is not a cabinet-only story, one hundred counties. Papers a resident actually needs: a status on a cabinet file, a clemency process that is Article III, Section 5(6) not a rumor, a disaster question that is not a mayor’s. The night shift is 100 counties, not one skyline.
The staff is the office. A serious Governor is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy. Raleigh is the job. The rest of the state is the hire.
Last regular 5 November 2024; next is 7 November 2028
Due process on this hire: there is no Governor primary in 2026. Next regular class is 7 November 2028. Confirm the 2028 primary, a second primary if one is actually required, filing, mail, and photo ID on ncsbe.gov. Do not teach a shortcut. Do not transplant Kentucky’s 2027 clock onto Raleigh. Do not transplant Indiana’s majority override onto Article II, Section 22.
The Constitution does not pause because 2026 was a House year. Equal protection does not pause because a county is rural. Charlotte does not become the capital because a mailer said so.
Two consecutive terms; do not invent a 2026 Governor race
Petition. Property. Peaceable assembly on Union Square and in a mountain precinct. Equal protection in one hundred counties. The right to a sample ballot that matches what the envelope actually holds — including the right to have seen no Governor line in 2026.
This office executes state law that can touch a license, a tax, a school, a prison, a river, a road, a hurricane year, and a vote. It must not treat Charlotte as the capital, Raleigh as the whole piedmont, or a U.S. Senate race as this desk. It must not crown itself.
Raleigh is the capital. The people of the state hire the office. The State Board of Elections is the door.
