Mississippi elects a Governor in odd years. Last regular: Tuesday, 7 November 2023. Next regular: Tuesday, 2 November 2027. Do not invent a 2026 Governor race.
When the eighty-two counties actually vote
- General: Tuesday, 2 November 2027. Polls 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Confirm on sos.ms.gov and yallvote.ms.
- Party primary: Mississippi’s statewide party primary is the first Tuesday after the first Monday in August of the year of the general (Miss. Code). For 2027 that Tuesday is 3 August 2027. Treat it as the statutory answer. Confirm the 2027 calendar on the Secretary of State when it is posted — qualifying, absentee, and any runoff belong on that PDF, not on a thread.
- Runoff / second primary: if the statute and the live calendar actually set one, confirm it on sos.ms.gov. Do not invent a date the SOS has not posted.
- Qualifying: major-party qualifying for state offices is a January–1 February window in the year of the primary (Miss. Code §§ 23-15-299, 23-15-297). Confirm this year’s dates on the Secretary of State.
This is a regular gubernatorial election. It is not a U.S. Senate race. Mississippi’s 2026 Senate race is Class II — a different desk. The House and State Senate stand the same odd year as this Governor. They are still not this desk. 2026 House specials (Districts 70 and 77 as of that cycle) were House remainders. They were not this Governor.
Winners take office the first Tuesday after the first Monday in January following the election (Section 116 — January 2028). Confirm the live Tuesday.
The Lieutenant Governor is not on this ticket. Mississippi elects that desk separately. Do not teach a Kentucky slate.

If a site and the official sample ballot disagree, the sample ballot wins. Two consecutive terms is a clock. It is not a crown for the next name.
A complaint against this desk is not a Gulf mayor file
A resident who was mistreated by a state agency, a license that never moved, or a cabinet that would not answer files on official doors: the Governor’s office, the department of jurisdiction, the Attorney General’s official doors (that desk is a different 2027 hire), the courts, and — for election process — the Secretary of State and the circuit clerk. A Facebook thread is not a grievance.
A Gulf mayor complaint is a city file. Jackson’s mayor is a different office (Mayor of Jackson). Do not file a state executive grievance at city hall.
Impeachment, when it is actually this constitution’s file, is articles in the House (two-thirds of members present — Section 49) and a Senate trial — not a comment.
After the river and a hurricane that is still Mississippi
Relief this office actually runs is a declaration and a Guard call-up in state status. A Pearl River flood at Jackson, a Gulf hurricane that still reports to Hinds County, a freeze on Delta ground, a pine-hills drought — mutual aid with Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Louisiana is real. Those states do not vote for this Governor. Memphis does not vote for this Governor.
The Legislature’s hour is the statute and the appropriation. The Governor’s hour is the night the river or the Gulf is the job. Read the office page before you read a mailer.
Papers, the Guard, the night shift on 82 counties
You are hiring the Governor of Mississippi for the whole state — four years, one executive, eighty-two counties. Papers a resident actually needs: a status on a cabinet file, a clemency process that is not a rumor, a disaster question that is not a mayor’s. The night shift is counties, not one beach.
The staff is the office. A serious Governor is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy. Jackson is the job. The rest of the state is the hire.
November 2, 2027 — confirm sos.ms.gov; August primary is statute
Due process on this hire: general 2 November 2027. Primary timing is statute — confirm the SOS 2027 calendar. Do not teach a shortcut. Do not transplant Louisiana’s Saturday primary onto Jackson. Do not transplant Virginia’s 2029 clock onto this 2027 hire.
The Constitution does not pause because 2026 was even. Equal protection does not pause because a county is rural. The Gulf does not become the capital because a mailer said so.
Two consecutive terms; names live on the sample ballot
Petition. Property. Peaceable assembly at the New Capitol and in a Delta precinct. Equal protection in eighty-two counties. The right to a sample ballot that matches what the envelope actually holds.
This office executes state law that can touch a license, a tax, a school, a prison, a river, a road, and a vote. It must not treat the Gulf as the capital, Jackson as the whole Pearl, Memphis as Mississippi, or a U.S. Senate race as this desk. It must not crown itself.
Jackson is the capital. The people of the state hire the office. The Secretary of State is the door.
