Winston County, Alabama, was created 12 February 1850 from the north of Walker as Hancock County, named for John Hancock, and renamed Winston in 1858 for Gov. John A. Winston. Houston was the first seat. The county seat moved to Double Springs in 1883. Double Springs is the seat. Encyclopedia of Alabama lists Haleyville as the largest city. Haleyville is not the county government. Addison, Lynn, Arley, and Natural Bridge are towns. The “Free State of Winston” is Civil War history — Looney’s Tavern, Unionism, a name the county still wears. It is not a second sheriff. It is not a second courthouse.
