Linden is the hall. Demopolis is the large city — it is not the hall. This is not Marengo, Illinois.
Marengo County, Alabama, was erected 6 February 1818 by the Territorial Legislature and named for Napoleon’s Battle of Marengo. The seat was surveyed as Linden (from Hohenlinden). Linden is the seat. Demopolis is the largest city. Demopolis is not the county government. For a short window 1868–1871 the seat sat in Demopolis; it returned to Linden in 1871 and remains there. Thomaston, Faunsdale, Sweet Water, Myrtlewood, Providence, and Dayton are not the hall. This is not Marengo, Illinois. Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. It does not sit here. The Vine and Olive Colony is a settlement story. It is not this courthouse.
Places include Linden, Demopolis, Thomaston, Faunsdale, Sweet Water, Myrtlewood, Providence, and Dayton. 2020 census: 19,323. This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — Black Belt river patrol and the Dunn Street detention house — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Marengo County.
Five districts on Coats Avenue. The chair rotates. They do not sit in Demopolis City Hall as this county.
Marengo is a five-member County Commission, single-member districts. The county’s own commission page says the chairman rotates each January. There is no County Executive. They fund roads, the courthouse campus at 101 East Coats Avenue, Linden, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Demopolis City Council is a city body. Linden’s city government is a city body.
The courthouse is at 101 East Coats Avenue (17th Judicial Circuit — with Greene and Sumter). The Circuit Clerk and Absentee Election Manager list that Coats Avenue door (SOS). An Illinois rumor is not this county.
The Sheriff is four years, Article V § 138, 2026 with the Governor. Take office 18 January 2027. The Mayor of Demopolis is a city clock.
The Tombigbee and the Black Belt sit here. Montgomery is still the capital.
U.S. 43 and U.S. 80 are the through roads. The Tombigbee River and the Black Warrior cut the west. Hale is north. Greene is northwest. Sumter is west. Choctaw is southwest. Clarke is south. Wilcox is southeast. Dallas is east. Perry is northeast. Staff who paste a Demopolis bluff onto Coats Avenue as the hall, or treat Linden as Illinois, or file “Demopolis as the seat now,” are on the wrong county.

Crime in unincorporated Marengo — Sweet Water country, Faunsdale, Thomaston, the Black Belt roads off U.S. 43 and U.S. 80 — is this Sheriff. Crime in Demopolis is often Demopolis Police. Crime in Linden is often municipal. This Sheriff is not Demopolis PD. The Marengo County Jail / Detention Center at 101 Dunn Street is this Sheriff’s house under Ala. Code § 14-6-1. It is not a Warden-department split. It is not Illinois. ALEA is the state. Civil process and court security at 101 East Coats are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at the Tombigbee. Remedy for Demopolis Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the river comes up is this count first.
Care without inventing a Vine and Olive chapel as this county
A peace order served in Sweet Water. A transport from 101 Dunn to 101 East Coats without becoming Demopolis Police. Do not invent a church. Do not invent White Bluff as this badge.
What a Black Belt river county actually watches
Court calendar on Coats Avenue. A wreck on U.S. 43. High water on the Tombigbee. Fog toward Faunsdale. A night road outside Thomaston. Coordination with Demopolis PD and ALEA without becoming those departments. Coordination with Dallas’s Sheriff or Sumter’s Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger. An Illinois photograph does not steal the seat. Montgomery remains the capital.
