Official minutes put the jail at that Elm Street door. 2026 reporting described a 2005 house the county has outgrown, with expansion work on the same campus. Ala. Code § 14-6-1 still puts the jail on this Sheriff. It is not a Warden-department split. It is not Madison County’s Wheeler Avenue house. ALEA is the state. Civil process and court security at 200 West Washington are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at the Tennessee line. Remedy for Athens Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff.
