Lake County, California

Lake County · Lakeport is the seat · Sacramento is the capital of California · the City of Clearlake is a city · Clear Lake is water · this is not Lake County, Illinois
Lakeport is the hall. Clearlake is a city. Clear Lake is the water. Sacramento is the capital.
Lake County, California, was created 20 May 1861 from Napa, and named for Clear Lake — not for the City of Clearlake as the whole county. Lakeport is the county seat. Sacramento is the capital of California. Lakeport is not the capital. Clearlake is not the seat. Do not read this page as Autauga-with-a-reservoir. Do not read this page as Tahoe-with-a-courthouse. Prattville is Autauga. South Lake Tahoe is El Dorado. Neither is this oval.
The City of Clearlake is a municipality — not the hall. Lakeport is both the seat and an incorporated city — the city government is not the county government. Kelseyville, Lucerne, Nice, Upper Lake, Middletown, Cobb, Hidden Valley Lake, and Lower Lake are communities — remainder, not a second seat. This is not Lake County, Illinois; not Lake County, Indiana; not Lake County, Florida; not Lake County, Ohio; not Lake County, Michigan.
This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — Clear Lake remainder patrol and Hill Road this badge still holds on Helbush Drive — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Lake County.
Five Supervisors on the first floor of Forbes. They do not sit as the State Assembly.
Lake is a general law county. A five-member Board of Supervisors, elected by district, sits in Board Chambers, 255 North Forbes Street, first floor, Lakeport, CA 95453. They fund roads, the Forbes courthouse campus, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Lakeport City Council is a city body. Clearlake City Council is a city body. The California Legislature sits in Sacramento. None of those is this Board.
Lake Superior Court lists the Lakeport Courthouse at 255 North Forbes Street (court on the fourth floor of a shared-use 1968 hall) and a Clearlake Branch at 7000-A South Center Drive. Do not invent one waterfront photograph as the whole map. Confirm live at lakecountyca.gov and lake.courts.ca.gov.
The Sheriff is a county officer (California Constitution Article XI; Government Code § 24000). This Sheriff is not on the 2026 gubernatorial table. Elections Code § 1300 (AB 759, 2022) moved sheriff and district attorney to the presidential primary. A sheriff elected in 2022 serves a six-year term; the next regular is the 2028 presidential primary. Last regular 7 June 2022. Take office at noon on the first Monday after January 1 succeeding election (Gov. Code § 24200). The Governor is 2026. That is a different desk in Sacramento.
Clear Lake is water. The Mayacamas are a range. Mendocino is a different county.
State Route 20 and State Route 29 ring this map. Clear Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake entirely in California — geography, not a city badge. The Mayacamas Mountains are a range, not a second county. Mount Konocti is a volcano, not this government. Mendocino is west — Ukiah is that hall. Sonoma is south — Santa Rosa is that hall. Napa is southeast — Napa is that hall. Colusa is east — Colusa is that hall. Staff who paste a Tahoe photograph onto Forbes Street, or treat Clearlake as the county government, or rewrite this county as Autauga-with-a-reservoir, are on the wrong county.
How a Clear Lake public finds Forbes, Martin, and Helbush
Board of Supervisors: 255 North Forbes Street, first floor, Lakeport. Registrar of Voters: 325 North Forbes Street — lakecountyca.gov/818/Registrar-of-Voters. Sheriff Administration: 1220 Martin Street, Lakeport, CA 95453 — (707) 262-4200. Hill Road Correctional Facility: 4913 Helbush Drive — (707) 262-4240. Lakeport Courthouse: 255 North Forbes Street. Confirm live at lakesheriff.com and lakecountyca.gov. A student who only knows a Tahoe postcard, or a Sacramento photograph as this county, or treats Clearlake City Hall as Hill Road, has not found this campus.
Hill Road still jails. Lakeport PD does not. Clearlake PD does not.
Crime in unincorporated Lake — Kelseyville, Lucerne, Nice, Upper Lake, Middletown, Cobb, Hidden Valley Lake, Lower Lake, and the remainder — is this Sheriff. Crime in Lakeport is often Lakeport Police. Crime in Clearlake is often Clearlake Police. This Sheriff is not those municipal departments. Hill Road at 4913 Helbush Drive is this Sheriff’s detention house — opened 1990, rated near 297, central reception for the county. Official doors did not show a separate county Department of Corrections taking this house — do not invent a jailer split.
CDCR is not this Sheriff. CHP is a state badge. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Lakeport City Hall, to Clearlake City Hall, or to a Sonoma jail.
Care without inventing Clearlake as this hall
A peace order served in unincorporated Kelseyville. A court-ordered transport from Helbush Drive to Forbes Street without becoming Lakeport PD. Marine work on Clear Lake. Search in the Mayacamas. Do not invent a church. Do not invent the City of Clearlake as this oval. Do not invent Sacramento as this hall.
What Lake actually watches
Court calendar on Forbes. A wreck on SR 29. Smoke in the Mayacamas. High water on Clear Lake. Wind on the ridges. Coordination with Lakeport PD, Clearlake PD, CHP, and Cal Fire without becoming those departments. Coordination with Mendocino’s Sheriff or Napa’s Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger. The lake is geography. Clearlake is a city. Neither is this oval as a second government.
