Greene County, Alabama

Greene County · Eutaw · the Black Belt seat sits here · Greene County, Georgia, is a different Greene
Eutaw is the hall. Erie was the first seat. This is not Greene County, Georgia.
Greene County, Alabama, was erected 13 December 1819 by the Territorial Legislature from lands ceded at the Treaty of Fort St. Stephens and named for Nathanael Greene. The first seat was Erie, on the Black Warrior, now in Hale. Flooding and fever moved the hall. The county seat moved to Eutaw in 1838. Eutaw is the seat. Eutaw is also the large city. The town took its name from the Battle of Eutaw Springs. Hale County was carved in 1867, taking the old Erie country. Boligee and Forkland are towns. Union is a town. This is not Greenville — that seat is Butler. This is not Greensboro — that seat is Hale. This is not Greene County, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina, Virginia, or Arkansas. By the 2020 census this is the least populous county in Alabama: 7,730. Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. It does not sit here.
Places include Eutaw, Boligee, Forkland, and Union. 2020 census: 7,730. This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — Black Belt patrol and the Finches Ferry jail this badge still holds — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Greene County.
Five districts elect their own chair. Probate does not sit. They do not sit in Boligee as this county.
Greene is a five-member County Commission, one commissioner per single-member district (Ala. Code § 45-32-72). Each body selects its chair from among its membership. The Judge of Probate does not serve as a member of this Commission. That is the local-law split. There is no County Executive. Commission and court business sit at the William M. Branch Courthouse, 400 Morrow Avenue, Eutaw (built 1993–1994). They fund roads, the jail, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Eutaw City Council is a city body. Boligee is a town.
The courthouse is at 400 Morrow Avenue, Eutaw, AL 35462 (17th Judicial Circuit — Greene, Marengo, and Sumter). The Circuit Clerk and Absentee Election Manager list that Morrow door (SOS). The 1869 Greek Revival house on the historic square is not this sitting hall. A Georgia rumor is not this county.
The Sheriff is four years, Article V § 138, 2026 with the Governor. Take office 18 January 2027. The Mayor of Eutaw is a city clock.
I-59, the Tombigbee, the Black Warrior. Greensboro is Hale.
Interstate 59 cuts the county. U.S. 43 and U.S. 11 are through roads. The Tombigbee River and the Black Warrior River are the water. Pickens is north. Tuscaloosa is northeast. Hale is east. Marengo is southeast. Sumter is west. Staff who paste a Greene County, Georgia, skyline onto Morrow, or treat this as Greenville, or file “Erie as the hall now,” are on the wrong county.
How an Eutaw public finds the Greene desk
Courthouse / Commission / Circuit Clerk / Absentee / Probate / Sheriff HQ (SOS): 400 Morrow Avenue, Eutaw, AL 35462. Board of Registrars: 110 Main Street, Eutaw. County jail: 951 Finches Ferry Road, Eutaw, AL 35462 (2018 Alabama law-enforcement directory; MapQuest and county listings). Confirm live addresses on greenealabama.org / greenecountycommission.com and the SOS county lookup. Aggregators sometimes paste 400 Morrow or 111 Greensboro Street as the jail; the detention house is Finches Ferry. A student who only knows a Georgia photograph has not found Eutaw.
Finches Ferry still jails. Eutaw PD does not.
Crime in unincorporated Greene — Boligee country, Forkland, the Black Belt roads off I-59 — is this Sheriff. Crime in Eutaw is often Eutaw Police. This Sheriff is not Eutaw PD. The Secretary of State lists the Sheriff at 400 Morrow Avenue. The Greene County Jail at 951 Finches Ferry Road is listed under this Sheriff’s Office. A Jail Administrator title here is Sheriff’s staff, not a separate ADOC house. Do not invent a Warden split. Do not paste Hale’s Corrections Drive onto Finches Ferry. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Eutaw Police or to Greene County, Georgia. Civil process and courthouse security at 400 Morrow are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at the Tombigbee. Remedy for Eutaw Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the rivers come up is this count first.
Care without inventing a courthouse-square chapel as this county
A peace order served in Forkland. A transport from 951 Finches Ferry to 400 Morrow without becoming Eutaw Police. Do not invent a church. Do not invent the 1869 square as this badge.
What Greene actually watches
Court calendar on Morrow. A wreck on I-59. High water on the Tombigbee. Fog toward Boligee. A night road outside Forkland. Coordination with Eutaw PD and ALEA without becoming those departments. Coordination with Hale’s Sheriff or Sumter’s Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger. A Georgia photograph does not steal the seat. Montgomery remains the capital.
