El Dorado County, California, was created 18 February 1850 as one of the original twenty-seven counties, and named for the El Dorado of the Gold Rush — Hangtown as a nickname for Placerville, not South Lake Tahoe as the whole county. Placerville is the county seat. Sacramento is the capital of California. Placerville is not the capital. South Lake Tahoe is not the seat. El Dorado Hills is not the seat. El Dorado is a charter county (charter ratified 8 November 1994). A five-member Board of Supervisors, elected by district, sits at 330 Fair Lane, Building A, Placerville, CA 95667. They fund roads, the Main Street / Fairlane / Cameron Park / Johnson Boulevard courthouse campuses, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Placerville City Council is a city body. South Lake Tahoe City Council is a city body. The California Legislature sits in Sacramento. None of those is this Board.
El Dorado Superior Court lists Placerville Main Street Branch at 495 Main Street, Placerville Building C at 2850 Fairlane Court, Cameron Park Branch at 2927 Meder Road, and South Lake Tahoe Branch at 1354 Johnson Boulevard. The Sheriff is a county officer (California Constitution Article XI; Government Code § 24000). The charter lists Sheriff/Coroner/Public Administrator among elected department heads and sends elections to general law. This Sheriff is not on the 2026 gubernatorial table. Elections Code § 1300 (AB 759, 2022) moved sheriff and district attorney to the presidential primary. The charter’s four-year sentence is the ordinary term; it did not lock a gubernatorial-year sheriff date before 1 January 2021. A sheriff elected in 2022 serves a six-year term; the next regular is the 2028 presidential primary. Last regular 7 June 2022. Take office at noon on the first Monday after January 1 succeeding election (Gov. Code § 24200). The Governor is 2026. That is a different desk in Sacramento. Other 2026 county officer races (assessor, auditor, clerk, treasurer, supervisors) are not this oval.
Highway 50 is a road. Hangtown is a nickname. Alpine is a different county.

State Route 89 and U.S. 50 meet at the lake — still this county’s south shore, not Placer’s north shore and not Nevada as this hall. Lake Tahoe is water, not a second county government. The South Fork American River is a river. The City of South Lake Tahoe is a municipality — not the Board. Staff who paste a lake photograph onto Fair Lane, or treat El Dorado Hills as this county government, or file Placerville as the capital, or rewrite this county as Autauga-with-a-nugget, are on the wrong county.

A student who only knows a Tahoe postcard, or a Sacramento photograph as this county, or treats South Lake Tahoe City Hall as the west-slope jail, has not found this campus.
Forni Road and Al Tahoe still jail. Placerville PD does not. South Lake Tahoe PD does not.
Crime in unincorporated El Dorado — El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Pollock Pines, Shingle Springs, Diamond Springs, Georgetown, and the remainder — is this Sheriff. Crime in Placerville is often Placerville Police. Crime in South Lake Tahoe is often South Lake Tahoe Police. This Sheriff is not those municipal departments. Placerville Jail at 300 Forni Road is the west-slope house (public listings: capacity near 303 plus medical beds). South Lake Tahoe Jail at 1051 Al Tahoe Boulevard is the basin house (public listings: capacity near 158). Official doors did not show a separate county Department of Corrections taking these houses — do not invent a jailer split.
CDCR is not this Sheriff. CHP is a state badge on Highway 50. U.S. Forest Service and state park rangers are not this oval. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Placerville PD, to South Lake Tahoe PD, to Alpine (no county jail), or to a Sacramento County door.

Coordination with Amador’s Sheriff or Placer’s Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger. Gold is history. The lake is geography. Neither is South Lake Tahoe PD as this oval.
