DeKalb County, Alabama, was erected 9 January 1836 from the Cherokee cession of 1835 and named for Baron Johann de Kalb. The seat moved through Rawlingsville, Bootsville, Camden, Lebanon, and Portersville before Fort Payne took it in 1876. Fort Payne is the seat. Fort Payne is the largest city. Dade, Walker, and Chattooga counties, Georgia, are east — Eastern Time on that side of the line. Cherokee is southeast. Etowah is south. Marshall is west. Staff who paste a Decatur, Georgia, skyline onto Grand Avenue, or treat Fort Payne PD as this county, or file “Atlanta’s DeKalb” with no seat, are on the wrong county.
