Crawford County · Van Buren is the seat · Fort Smith is Sebastian · Little Rock is the capital

Van Buren is the seat. Fort Smith is Sebastian. This 1842 courthouse is still the hall.

Crawford County, Arkansas, was erected 1820 — among the oldest counties in the Territory — and named for William H. Crawford. Association of Arkansas Counties: it was the largest county in Arkansas when established, originally taking in land that later became eight counties and a slice of Indian Territory. Van Buren is the county seat. Van Buren is also the large city on this map. Fort Smith is not this county. Fort Smith sits in Sebastian County across the Arkansas River. Alma, Mountainburg, Mulberry, Cedarville, Dyer, Kibler, and Dyer remainder are not the hall. This is not Crawford County, Georgia / Illinois / Indiana / Iowa / Kansas / Michigan / Missouri / Ohio / Pennsylvania / Wisconsin. Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas. It does not sit here.

The courthouse at 300 Main Street, Van Buren, AR 72956, is listed on the National Register. AAC and county civic copy still call it the oldest active county courthouse west of the Mississippi. Original portion 1842. A Courthouse Annex lists at 220 South 4th Street. Circuit Clerk lists at 317 Main Street. This is not a second county. This is not Fort Smith as this oval.

Places include Van Buren, Alma, Mountainburg, Mulberry, Cedarville, Dyer, Kibler, and the Ozark-and-river remainder. 2020 census: 61,133 (Association of Arkansas Counties). This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — Oklahoma-line remainder patrol and the jail at 4235 Alma Highway this badge still holds — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Crawford County.

Thirteen Justices at 300 Main. They fund. They do not hire the Sheriff.

Crawford is a County Judge plus a thirteen-member Quorum Court of Justices of the Peace. Amendment 55 made the Judge the executive and the Quorum Court the legislature. County Judge lists at 300 Main Street, Room 4. They fund roads, the 1842 hall, the annex, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Van Buren City Council is a city body. Alma City Council is a city body. Fort Smith Board of Directors is Sebastian. None of those is this Quorum Court.

County Clerk lists 300 Main, Room 7. Circuit Clerk lists 317 Main. Treasurer and Assessor sit on Main. This county elects a separate Collector at 300 Main, Room 2. Do not invent a combined Sheriff-Collector here. Confirm live at crawfordcountyar.gov and arcounties.org/counties/crawford. 21st Judicial Circuit.

The Sheriff is four years, Arkansas Constitution Article 7, § 46 as amended by Amendment 95, on the gubernatorial table. Last regular Tuesday, 8 November 2022. Next regular Tuesday, 3 November 2026. Preferential primary Tuesday, 3 March 2026 (already sat). Primary runoff Tuesday, 31 March 2026 (already sat where needed). Take office 1 January 2027 (A.C.A. § 21-1-102). The Governor is 2026. That is a different desk in Little Rock. Justices of the Peace are two years — a different desk.

Oklahoma line, I-40, Arkansas River. Little Rock is the capital and it is not here.

Ozark ridges in the north. Rolling farm and river bottom toward the south. I-40 is the through road. The Arkansas River is the southern wall toward Sebastian. Oklahoma (Sequoyah) is west. Washington County is north — Fayetteville is that hall. Franklin is east — two seats, Charleston and Ozark, not this oval. Sebastian is south — Fort Smith is that hall. Staff who paste a Fort Smith skyline onto 300 Main, or treat Van Buren as a suburb of Sebastian, or file Little Rock as this seat, are on the wrong county.

How a public finds 300 Main, 317 Main, and 4235 Alma Highway

County Judge / Quorum Court / County Clerk: 300 Main Street, Van Buren, AR 72956. Circuit Clerk: 317 Main Street. Annex court: 220 South 4th Street. Sheriff headquarters and county jail: 4235 Alma Highway, Van Buren, AR 72956 — office (479) 474-2261. Confirm live doors at crawfordcountyar.gov, crawfordcountysheriff.org, and arcounties.org/counties/crawford before you drive. A student who only knows a Fort Smith photograph, or treats I-40 as this oval, has not found Van Buren.

Alma Highway still jails. Van Buren PD does not. Fort Smith PD does not.

Crime in unincorporated Crawford — Mountainburg country, Mulberry remainder, Cedarville roads, I-40 frontage outside the cities — is this Sheriff. Crime in Van Buren is often Van Buren Police. Crime in Alma is often Alma Police. This Sheriff is not those badges. The Arkansas Sheriffs’ Association and the Sheriff’s own detention page list the adult house at 4235 Alma Highway with a posted 307-bed certification. That house is this badge’s shop (A.C.A. § 12-41-502). It is not a separate county Department of Corrections that retired this jailer. It is not ADC. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Fort Smith, to Sebastian, or to Little Rock as this jailer.

Civil process and court security at 300 Main and 220 South 4th are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at a river landing. Remedy for Van Buren Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the Arkansas River leaves the banks is this count first.

What this river-and-ridge county actually watches

Court calendar on Main Street. Annex docket on South 4th. A wreck on I-40. High water on the Arkansas. Fog on the Oklahoma line. Ice toward Mountainburg. Coordination with Van Buren Police, Alma Police, and Arkansas State Police without becoming those departments. Coordination with Sebastian’s Sheriff or Washington’s Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger, and not a reason to file Fort Smith as this hall. A Fort Smith photograph does not steal the seat. Little Rock remains the capital. This remains Van Buren.
