Coosa County, Alabama, was erected 18 December 1832 and named for a Creek town and the Coosa River. Rockford has been the seat since 1832. Rockford’s 2020 census was 351. Goodwater is the largest town (about 1,291 in 2020). Goodwater is not the county government. Kellyton is not the county government. Census classifies Coosa in the Talladega–Sylacauga micropolitan area. That is a statistical box. It is not a Talladega suburb hall. Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. It does not sit here.

Crime in Goodwater is often a town matter when that town fields officers; the Sheriff remains the county peace officer. The Coosa County Jail at 296 School Street is this Sheriff’s house. The county’s own sheriff page says the Sheriff serves as the county’s jailor. The Alabama Sheriffs Association directory lists jail capacity at that School Street address. An 1842 stone jail still stands in Rockford as history — oldest extant stone jail in Alabama in local listings — it is not today’s booking house. Ala.
