Columbia County, Arkansas, was created 17 December 1852 from Lafayette, Hempstead, Ouachita, and Union. Magnolia was selected as the seat at formation and has remained the seat. FamilySearch and county histories: this is the only one of Arkansas’s seventy-five counties not situated on a river. Waldo, Emerson, McNeil, and Taylor are towns — not the hall. Southern Arkansas University is a campus. It is not county government. This is not Columbia, Missouri (Boone County). This is not Columbia, South Carolina (Richland). This is not Columbia County, Georgia / New York / Oregon / Pennsylvania / Washington / Wisconsin / Florida. Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas. It does not sit here.

U.S. 82 and U.S. 79 are through roads. Highway 371 runs west of Magnolia past the live detention house. Lafayette is west — Lewisville is that hall. Nevada is north — Prescott is that hall. Ouachita is north and east — Camden is that hall. Union is east — El Dorado is that hall. Louisiana is south. Staff who paste a Missouri skyline onto Court Square, or treat SAU as this county government, or file “200 West Calhoun as the live jail,” are on the wrong county.

The 1931 jail at 200 West Calhoun is a National Register landmark, not the live house. No separate county Department of Corrections turned up — do not invent a jailer split. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Columbia, Missouri, or to a campus desk. Civil process and courthouse security at 1 Court Square are the Sheriff.
