Colbert County, Alabama, was erected 6 February 1867 from Franklin and named for Chickasaw leaders George and Levi Colbert. An 1870 election fixed the seat at Tuscumbia. Tuscumbia is the seat. Muscle Shoals is the largest city. Muscle Shoals is not the county government. Sheffield is not the county government. Florence is Lauderdale County — across the Tennessee River, a different sheriff, a different hall. Helen Keller was born at Ivy Green in Tuscumbia. Ivy Green is a historic house. U.S. 72 and U.S. 43 are the through roads. The Tennessee River is north — Wilson Lake, Wilson Dam, TVA water. Lauderdale sits across the water; Florence is that seat. Lawrence is east. Franklin is south. Tishomingo County, Mississippi, is west. The Natchez Trace clips the northwest corner. Staff who paste a Muscle Shoals studio skyline onto North Main, or treat Florence PD as this county, or file “the Shoals” with no seat, are on the wrong county.

Crime in Muscle Shoals is often Muscle Shoals Police. Crime in Sheffield is often Sheffield Police. Crime in Tuscumbia is often Tuscumbia Police. The Colbert County Jail at 107 West 4th Street is this Sheriff’s house. The Sheriff’s own jail page says the 1962 house was built to hold 62, male prisoners are housed there, and female prisoners are housed at the Tuscumbia City Jail by arrangement. That is a housing arrangement. It is not a Warden split. It is not a city taking the county jail. Ala. Code § 14-6-1 still puts the jail on this Sheriff. ALEA is the state (a trooper post lists at Hatch Boulevard in Sheffield). Civil process and court security at 201 North Main are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at the Tennessee River. Remedy for Muscle Shoals Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the river comes up is this count first.

A peace order served in Cherokee. A transport from 107 West Fourth to the second floor of 201 North Main without becoming Muscle Shoals Police. Do not invent a church. Do not invent a birthplace museum as this badge.

Court calendar on North Main. A wreck on U.S. 72. A rise on Wilson Lake. A Quad-Cities night that is still this county’s road outside city limits. Coordination with Muscle Shoals Police, Sheffield Police, Tuscumbia Police, and ALEA without becoming those departments. Coordination with Lauderdale across the river is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger.
