Cleveland County, Arkansas, was created 17 April 1873 as Dorsey County from Bradley, Dallas, Jefferson, and Lincoln. Citizens renamed it 5 March 1885 for Grover Cleveland. Toledo was the first seat. That courthouse burned in 1889. After two contested elections, the Arkansas Supreme Court seated Rison on 11 April 1891. Rison is the county seat and the largest city. Kingsland is the other city — not the hall. New Edinburg is a town, not the hall. This is not Cleveland, Ohio. This is not Cleveland County, Oklahoma (Norman). This is not Cleveland County, North Carolina (Shelby). Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas. It does not sit here. The county is in the Little Rock metro as a census ring, not as the capital county.

Cleveland is an elected Quorum Court of justices of the peace. Justices sit two years. The court meets 7 p.m. the first Monday at the courthouse. U.S. 79 and U.S. 167 are through roads. The Saline River bisects the county. Timber is the leading industry. Marks’ Mills Battleground State Park sits at Highways 8 and 97 — a park, not a jail. Jefferson is northeast — Pine Bluff is that hall. Lincoln is east — Star City is that hall. Drew is southeast. Bradley is south — Warren is that hall. Calhoun is southwest — Hampton is that hall. Dallas is west — Fordyce is that hall. Grant is northwest. Staff who paste a Terminal Tower skyline onto Magnolia Street, or treat Toledo as this county government now, or file “Rison PD as this Sheriff for the whole map,” are on the wrong county.

A student in Kingsland still uses this Sheriff.
