Chambers County · LaFayette · the Piedmont seat sits here · Valley is not the hall

LaFayette is the hall. Valley and Lanett are mill towns.

Chambers County, Alabama, was erected 18 December 1832 from Creek lands after the Treaty of Cusseta. LaFayette is the seat — often spelled LaFayette on the county’s own doors. Valley is the largest city. Valley is not the county government. Lanett is not the county government. Valley was incorporated 1980 from mill villages along the Chattahoochee (Fairfax, Shawmut, Langdale). Lanett stayed its own mill city. This is not Chambers County, Texas. Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. It does not sit here.

Places include LaFayette, Valley, Lanett, Five Points, Cusseta, and Waverly (the last straddles Lee). 2020 census: 34,772. This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — mill-and-line patrol and the Alabama Avenue detention house — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Chambers County.

Six districts. They do not sit in Valley City Hall.

Chambers is a six-member County Commission, one commissioner per district. The live county roster lists Districts 1 through 6. They fund roads, the courthouse campus, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Valley City Council is a city body. Lanett City Council is a city body. LaFayette’s town government is a town body.

The Sheriff is four years, Article V § 138, 2026 with the Governor. Take office 18 January 2027. The Mayor of Valley is a city clock.

The Chattahoochee is a Georgia line. Texas is a different Chambers.

I-85 runs the mill corridor. U.S. 431 and U.S. 29 are the through roads. The Chattahoochee is east — Troup and Harris counties, Georgia, sit across the water. Randolph is north. Tallapoosa is west. Lee is south. The Tallapoosa River clips the northwestern corner. Staff who paste a mill skyline onto Courthouse Square, or treat Valley PD as this county, or file “Chambers County, Texas,” are on the wrong county.

How a LaFayette public finds the Chambers desk

The courthouse sits at 2 South LaFayette Street, LaFayette, AL 36862. Circuit Clerk / Absentee Election Manager: Suite B-114. Sheriff administration: Suite C, same building (chamberscountyal.gov and the SOS city-county lookup). Detention Facility: 105 Alabama Avenue West, LaFayette, AL 36862. Confirm live addresses on those doors. A student who only knows a mill photograph has not found LaFayette.

Alabama Avenue still jails. Valley PD does not.

Crime in unincorporated Chambers — Five Points, Cusseta, the pine between the mill cities and the seat — is this Sheriff. Crime in Valley is often Valley Police. Crime in Lanett is often Lanett Police. The Chambers County Detention Facility at 105 Alabama Avenue West is this Sheriff’s house. The county site lists it under the Sheriff’s Department. The Examiners of Public Accounts treat the Sheriff as the jailer under Ala. Code § 14-6-1. The house also takes municipal prisoners from LaFayette, Lanett, and Valley — a feeding-fund fact in the 2025 examination, not a second jailer. ALEA is the state. Civil process and court security at 2 South LaFayette Street are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at the Chattahoochee. Remedy for Valley Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the river comes up is this count first.

Care without inventing a mill chapel as this county

A peace order served in Five Points. A transport from 105 Alabama Avenue West to Suite B-114 without becoming Lanett Police. Do not invent a church. Do not invent a mill as this badge.

What Chambers actually watches

Court calendar on South LaFayette Street. A wreck on I-85. A rise on the Chattahoochee. A mill-town night that is still this county’s road outside city limits. Coordination with Valley Police, Lanett Police, and ALEA without becoming those departments. Coordination with a Georgia sheriff across the river is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger.
