The last abolition
Berkshire is a geographic county at the western end of Massachusetts. It is not a Midwestern courthouse county with a board running roads and trash. County government was abolished July 1, 2000 — last in the 1997–2000 wave (Franklin 1997, Middlesex 1997, Hampden and Worcester 1998, Hampshire and Essex and Suffolk 1999, then Berkshire). What remains is a map: Pittsfield, North Adams, Adams, Williamstown, Great Barrington, Sheffield, Lee, Lenox, Stockbridge, and the hill towns the census and the Trial Court still put in Berkshire.
Courts still say Berkshire. The Sheriff is still elected here. Municipal police, fire, schools, and 311-equivalents are city and town services. Confirm abolitions on the Secretary of the Commonwealth county page.

Land — Taconic, Hoosac, Housatonic
The Taconic wall against New York. The Hoosac Range. Mount Greylock. The Housatonic through south county. The Massachusetts Turnpike’s western end as travel, not as the county itself. North Adams is a mill city in a notch, not a suburb of Pittsfield. Williamstown looks at Vermont. Sheffield looks at Connecticut. A winter storm here is an ice road and an isolated hill town. It is not a Cape Cod canal. It is not a Springfield flood wall. No harbor. No Cape.
Politics and law — no commission, remaining officers
Unlike Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Norfolk, and Plymouth, Berkshire does not elect county commissioners. The SOS table is explicit: that office is elected only in those five. Residents deal with municipal halls and state agencies. That does not erase the Sheriff, the deeds office, or the court names.
City charter governs Pittsfield. The rest are towns (North Adams is a city). The General Court and special acts did the abolition. Confirm on official municipal sites.
Technology, education, outreach
Each municipality has its own site. Pittsfield’s site does not speak for Sandisfield. The Sheriff’s official site speaks for custody and process. A student who wants a civic job looks at that city’s or town’s employment page or that Sheriff’s employment page. Outreach that only knows Lenox in July is not doing Clarksburg.
Justice, rights, remedy, relief, service
Crime and fire are municipal. Jail and civil process are the Sheriff (Cheshire Road, Pittsfield). Prosecution is the Berkshire District Attorney — another office. A resident’s rights do not change at the Great Barrington line. Remedy for a city police issue is that city’s professional-standards door. Remedy for a jail issue is the Sheriff’s door. Relief in a notch blizzard is mutual aid plus the Commonwealth. Papers still get served on a dirt road in Windsor.
