A shire that still sits
Belknap is a working county in central New Hampshire. It is not a Massachusetts abolished map. Commissioners still sit. A county convention of this county’s state representatives still votes a budget. A county nursing home still takes a census. A house of correction still takes a count. The Sheriff is still elected here. Municipal police, fire, schools, and town clerks are city and town services. Confirm officers on the Secretary of State county roster.
Concord is Merrimack County. Manchester is Hillsborough. Ossipee is Carroll. Do not steal them.

Water, ice, and eleven municipalities
Lake Winnipesaukee is the postcard. The map is eleven municipalities: Laconia the city, then Alton, Barnstead, Belmont, Center Harbor, Gilford, Gilmanton, Meredith, New Hampton, Sanbornton, Tilton. Paugus Bay and the Weirs are Laconia, not a county. A winter storm here is black ice on 11 and a frozen crossing. A summer Saturday is a crowd that is still this county’s law. No ocean. No capital dome. No mill-city skyline as the whole story.
Commissioners, convention, two-year sheriff
Three county commissioners sit by district. The convention is the House members from this county, not a second board of selectmen. The Sheriff, County Attorney, Treasurer, Register of Deeds, and Register of Probate are elected. Belknap’s sheriff clock is two years — RSA 653:1. 2026 is on. Coös is the North Country exception (four-year, no 2026). Rockingham is the seacoast exception (four-year, is 2026). Do not mix those tables.
Laconia is a city. The rest are towns. March town meeting is not the November sheriff oval.
How a Lakes public actually reaches a desk
Each municipality has its own site. Laconia’s site does not speak for Gilmanton. The Sheriff’s official listing speaks for process and court on this map. The house of correction’s listing speaks for custody. A student looks at that town’s jobs page or that department’s jobs page. Outreach that only knows Weirs Beach is not doing Barnstead.
Custody, courts, papers, rights
Crime and fire are municipal. Jail is the county Department of Corrections. Prosecution is the County Attorney — another elected desk. Rights do not change at the Meredith line. Remedy for a town police issue is that town. Remedy for a jail issue is the superintendent and the commissioners. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper or a transport is the Sheriff. Relief in a lake blizzard is mutual aid plus the State. Papers still get served in Sanbornton.
