Barbour County, Alabama

Barbour County · Clayton · the geographic center still holds the seat · Eufaula is not the hall
Clayton is the hall. Eufaula is the large city.
Barbour County, Alabama, was erected 18 December 1832 and named for James Barbour of Virginia. Clayton is the seat — chosen in 1834 because it sits at the geographic center. Louisville was the first seat for a short year. Eufaula is the largest city. Eufaula is not the county government. By the 1870s Eufaula had outgrown Clayton. The compromise, Act No. 106 of 12 February 1879, put county courts in both towns. Two courthouses still operate. The official county site says so. Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. It does not sit here. This is not Barbour County, West Virginia.
Places include Clayton, Eufaula, Clio, Louisville, Baker Hill, and Blue Springs. 2020 census: 25,223. This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — two-courthouse process and the Clayton jail — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Barbour County.
Seven districts. Meetings alternate Clayton and Eufaula.
Barbour is a seven-member County Commission, one commissioner per district. Regular meetings sit the second Tuesday of each month, alternating between the Clayton Courthouse and the Eufaula Courthouse. They fund roads, the two court campuses, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Eufaula City Council is a city body. Eufaula Police is a city badge.
The Sheriff is four years, Article V § 138, 2026 with the Governor. Take office 18 January 2027. The Mayor of Eufaula is a city clock.
Two courthouses do not make two counties.
Clayton Courthouse: One Court Square, Clayton, AL 36016 (Circuit Clerk 334-775-8366). Eufaula Courthouse: 405 East Barbour Street, Suite A119, Eufaula, AL 36027 (Circuit Clerk 334-687-1515). Circuit, District, and Probate all split work across the two houses. That is one county. One Sheriff. Staff who paste Eufaula’s riverfront onto Clayton as the only hall, or treat Eufaula PD as this county, are on the wrong county.
The Chattahoochee is a river and a Georgia line.
Lake Eufaula / Walter F. George sits on the Chattahoochee. Georgia is east — Quitman, Clay, and Stewart counties across the water. Pike is west. Bullock is northwest. Russell is northeast. Henry and Dale sit south. U.S. 82 and U.S. 431 are the through roads. Staff who file this office in Georgia, or treat Clayton as a suburb of Eufaula’s city hall, are on the wrong county.
How a Clayton public finds the Barbour desk
Sheriff headquarters and the county jail list together at 24 Robertson Airport Drive, Clayton, AL 36016 (barbourcountysheriff.org). Courthouse work is One Court Square (Clayton) and 405 East Barbour Street (Eufaula). Confirm live addresses on barbourcountyal.gov and the Circuit Clerk at barbour.alacourt.gov. A student who only knows a riverfront photograph has not found Clayton.
Robertson Airport Drive still jails. Ventress is ADOC.
Crime in unincorporated Barbour — and in Clayton, Clio, Louisville, Baker Hill where those towns do not keep a full municipal police — is this Sheriff. Crime in Eufaula is often Eufaula Police. The Barbour County Jail at 24 Robertson Airport Drive is this Sheriff’s house (about 98 beds). Ventress Correctional Facility on Alabama 239 near Clayton is Alabama Department of Corrections — a state prison, not this county jail. Easterling Correctional Facility at Clio is also ADOC. Do not paste those state houses onto Robertson Airport Drive. Civil process and court security in both courthouses are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at the Chattahoochee. Remedy for Eufaula Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the lake comes up is this count first.
Care without inventing a river chapel as this county
A peace order served in Clio. A transport from Robertson Airport Drive to One Court Square — or to 405 East Barbour — without becoming Eufaula Police. Do not invent a church. Do not invent a lake marina as this badge.
What Barbour actually watches
Two court calendars. A wreck on U.S. 82. A rise on the Chattahoochee. Coordination with Eufaula Police and ALEA without becoming those departments. Coordination with a Georgia sheriff across the lake is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger.
