Ashley County · Hamburg is the seat · Crossett is the mill town — not the hall · Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas

Hamburg is the hall. Crossett is the mill town — not the hall.

Ashley County, Arkansas, was erected 30 November 1848 from part of Drew County, with later line work into 1861. Hamburg is the seat. It is a small city in south Arkansas. It is not the capital of Arkansas. Little Rock is. Crossett is the large city and the mill town. Crossett is not the county hall. North Crossett and West Crossett are census places — not the shire. Fountain Hill, Parkdale, Portland, and Wilmot are towns in this county — they are not the hall. This is not Ashley County in another state. There is no second Arkansas hall by that name that can steal Hamburg. This Sheriff is the county officer. This Sheriff is not Crossett Police. This Sheriff is not Hamburg Police.

Places include Hamburg, Crossett, Fountain Hill, Parkdale, Portland, Wilmot, North Crossett, and West Crossett. 2020 census: 19,062. This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — timber-and-delta remainder patrol and the jail at 842 Ashley 12 West this badge still holds — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Ashley County.

Nine Justices on Jefferson Street. They fund. They do not hire the Sheriff.

Ashley is a County Judge plus a nine-member Quorum Court. The county’s own page says the Justices are elected every two years and meet the second Tuesday of each month in the Ashley County Courthouse. They fund roads, the detention house, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Hamburg City Council is a city body. Crossett City Council is a city body. The Arkansas General Assembly sits in Little Rock. None of those is this Quorum Court.

The courthouse is 205 East Jefferson Street, Hamburg, AR 71646. The county notes a round courtroom — all participants face one another. District Court splits: Hamburg Division, 305 East Adams Street; Crossett Division lists a Crossett door. Confirm at ashleycountyar.com and arcounties.org/counties/ashley. Monticello is Drew. El Dorado is Union. Lake Village is Chicot.

The Sheriff is four years, Article 7, § 46 / Amendment 95, on the gubernatorial table. Last regular Tuesday, 8 November 2022. Next regular Tuesday, 3 November 2026. Preferential primary Tuesday, 3 March 2026 (already sat). Take office 1 January 2027 (A.C.A. § 21-1-102). The Governor is 2026. That is a different desk in Little Rock. The Mayor of Hamburg is a city clock. This county elects a separate Collector — not this Sheriff as tax collector.

Bayou Bartholomew and the Louisiana line. Little Rock is the capital.

Coastal plain: pine timber on the hills, cropland on the sandy loam. Bayou Bartholomew — the longest bayou in the United States — runs this map. Overflow National Wildlife Refuge sits west of the bayou. U.S. 82 and U.S. 425 are through roads. Drew County is north — Monticello is that hall. Bradley is northwest. Union is west — El Dorado is that hall. Chicot is east. Morehouse Parish and Union Parish, Louisiana, are south. Staff who paste Crossett’s mill gate onto Jefferson Street, or treat Hamburg as a Louisiana hall, or file Little Rock as this seat, are on the wrong county.

How a Hamburg public finds Jefferson and Ashley 12 West

County Judge / Clerk / Circuit Clerk (courthouse): 205 East Jefferson Street. Sheriff’s Office and jail: 842 Ashley 12 West, Hamburg, AR 71646 — phone (870) 853-2040. Confirm live doors at ashleycountyar.com/sheriff and ashleycountysheriff.com before you drive. A student who only knows a mill photograph, or a Little Rock postcard, has not found this campus.

Ashley 12 West still jails. Crossett PD does not.

Crime in unincorporated Ashley — Fountain Hill country, Portland remainder, Wilmot remainder, the timber outside Crossett — is this Sheriff. Crime in Hamburg is often Hamburg Police. Crime in Crossett is often Crossett Police. This Sheriff is not those badges. The county’s own Sheriff page says the Sheriff is the county’s jailer and lists detention at 842 Ashley 12 West. That house is this badge’s shop. It is not a separate county Department of Corrections that retired this jailer. It is not ADC. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to a mill gate, to Crossett City Hall, or to Little Rock.

Civil process and court security at 205 East Jefferson are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at a chip-mill parking lot. Remedy for Crossett Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the bayou leaves the banks is this count first.

What south-Arkansas timber country actually watches

Court calendars at 205 East Jefferson. A wreck on U.S. 82. High water on Bayou Bartholomew. A night road outside Fountain Hill. Coordination with Hamburg Police, Crossett Police, and ASP without becoming those departments. Coordination with Drew’s Sheriff or Chicot’s Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger, and not a reason to file Monticello as this hall. A mill photograph does not steal the seat. Little Rock remains the capital. Hamburg remains the hall.
