2027 Election — Attorney General of Kentucky

Kentucky Attorney General · 2027 · educational cover · justice civic · American Future Type
This is Side Two — the 2027 hire, not a leftover 2026 race
This page is the arena for this office, this cycle. Unique teaching for the job lives on the office twin.
It is not a campaign. It does not crown a winner. It does not tell you who to vote for. Names belong on the official sample ballot.
Kentucky elects this lawyer in odd years, with the Governor. Last regular: 7 November 2023. Next regular: Tuesday, 2 November 2027. Do not invent a 2026 Attorney General race.
When the Commonwealth actually votes for this lawyer
- Primary: Tuesday, 18 May 2027 (first Tuesday after the third Monday in May — 2027 Kentucky Election Calendar, KRS 118). Confirm leftover dates on elect.ky.gov.
- General: Tuesday, 2 November 2027. Polls 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Filing (primary papers): first Friday following the first Monday in January — 8 January 2027, 4:00 p.m. Confirm on the Secretary of State.
- Bar clock: eight years’ practice before election (Section 92). Confirm the live rule. This page is teaching, not a filing packet.
This is a regular Attorney General election. It is not a U.S. Senate race. Kentucky’s 2026 Senate race is Class II. The House of Representatives is 2026. The Governor is a different 2027 hire (Governor of Kentucky · 2027). This desk is the Commonwealth’s lawyer.
Winners take office the first Monday in January after the election (Section 91). Confirm the live Monday on official Kentucky sites. Do not transplant the Governor’s fifth-Tuesday clock onto this lawyer.
Names belong on elect.ky.gov
Do not take names from a news comment or a text thread.
- Official candidate list / sample ballot — elect.ky.gov and the Secretary of State
- County sample ballot and the county clerk in this county
- Current Attorney General of record (not the same thing as the 2027 nominee) — ag.ky.gov
- Registration and ballot status — State Board of Elections voter tools
If a site and the official sample ballot disagree, the sample ballot wins.
Section 93 is on this cycle as a clock: after a second consecutive term the office sits out four years. That is a clock. It is not a crown for the next name.
A complaint against this desk is not a Louisville mayor file
A resident who was mistreated by a state file, a consumer shop that would not answer, or a license that never moved files on official doors: the Attorney General’s consumer and official-misconduct doors, the cabinet of jurisdiction, the courts, and — for election process — the State Board of Elections and the county clerk. A Facebook thread is not a grievance.
A Louisville mayor complaint is a city file. Frankfort’s mayor is a different office (Mayor of Frankfort). A Commonwealth’s Attorney is a circuit prosecutor. Do not file a state-lawyer grievance at city hall.
Impeachment, when it is actually this constitution’s file, is articles in the House and a Senate trial — not a comment.
After the river and the ice, the consumer door still opens
Relief this office actually runs is a state consumer door, an opinion a board asked for, and the litigation the statute actually assigns. A Kentucky River flood on the Frankfort bluff, ice on I-64, a mountain night, a Purchase tornado — mutual aid with Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, and West Virginia is real. Those states do not vote for this Attorney General.
The General Assembly’s hour is the statute. The Attorney General’s hour is the file that is state, not a county DA’s. Read the office page before you read a mailer.
Papers, opinions, the night a county attorney asks Frankfort
You are hiring the Attorney General of Kentucky for the whole Commonwealth — four years, one lawyer, a Department of Law, not a Governor. Papers a resident actually needs: a consumer status, an opinion process that is KRS 15.020 not a rumor, a public-integrity question that is not a mayor’s. The night shift is 120 counties, not one skyline.
The staff is the office. A serious Attorney General is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy. Frankfort is the job. The rest of the Commonwealth is the hire.
May 18 primary, November 2 general — confirm elect.ky.gov
Due process on this hire: party primary 18 May 2027, general 2 November 2027. Confirm filing, mail and early voting, and voter ID on elect.ky.gov. Do not teach a shortcut.
A vacancy after the election is succession under this constitution, not a tweet. Do not transplant Louisiana’s Saturday primary onto Frankfort. Do not transplant Virginia’s 2029 clock onto 2027.
The Constitution does not pause because 2026 was even. Equal protection does not pause because a county is rural. Louisville does not become the capital because a mailer said so.
Two consecutive then a sit-out is a clock, not a crown
Petition. Property. Peaceable assembly on the bluff and in a mountain precinct. Equal protection in one hundred twenty counties. The right to a sample ballot that matches what the envelope actually holds.
This office practices state law that can touch a license, a consumer file, a prison, a river, a road, and a vote. It must not treat Louisville as the capital, Frankfort as the whole river, or a U.S. Senate race as this desk. It must not crown itself.
Frankfort is the capital. The people of the Commonwealth hire the office. The State Board of Elections is the door.
